TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT

PRESENTATION SOCIETY Mr A. H. Cameron presided over the fourth annual meeting of the Transport Department Employees’ Presentation So°*The annual report revealed that of a staff of 407 members, 394 were contributing to the funds of the society, 23 of whom had temporarily left the service to proceed on active service. In addition to receiving presentations prior to going overseas, these members were kept financial on the general presentation fund during their absence. During the year four members of the society—Messrs Arlidge, Berry. Boyd, and A. Watson—had passed away, and their relatives had received the benefits due. Eleven members- of the society resigned from the service to take up other employment, and six members retired. On these 21 members, £146 11s 7d was paid out. On the four years' working of the society, £693 12s 3d had been subscribed, and the expenditure amounted to £495 6s 4d, leaving a credit balance on the three accounts (general, presentation fund, soldiers’ presentation fund, and social fund) of £194 2s 7d. Each fund is in a healthy condition, and over the three accounts the subscription is based on threepence per member per week.

Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman paid a tribute to ’the secretary (Mr W. Smith) and the treasurer (Mr E. Read) for the comprehensive manner in which the statements had been presented. The society had ‘decided to take in hand the matter of sending parcels to members serving overseas, and it was anticipated that a well-organ-ised and comprehensive scheme would be put into operation almost immediately.

The election of office-bearers resulted as follows;—President, Mr F. Tombs; immediate past president, Mr A. H. Cameron; vice-presidents, Messrs W. B. Richards and C. Gray: secretary, Mr W. Smith: treasurer, Mr E. Read: trustees, Messrs F. Tombs and R. Doig; auditors, Messrs W. Weaver and C. Gray; committee—Messrs A. Webster. E. N. Smith. J. Steel, R. Braithwaite, C. Patterson, together with two representatives of the Tramways Union, two representatives from the Tramways Social Club, two representatives from the Tramways Sick and Accident Society, and one representative each from the permanent way, Mornington, Roslyn, and Kaikorai sections.

The meeting closed with votes of thanks to tlie officers and others for services to the society.
