WELFARE OF ANIMALS
SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY The annual meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday, the president (Mr W, Downie Stewart) occupying the chair. Annual Report Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman said that it clearly showed that, with the modest revenue at their disposal, the inspector had managed to visit a very large number of places. It might have been feared that, owing to war-time conditions, the society would have suffered as regards membership, but it was pleasing to record a slight gain in that direction. Three legacies had been received during the year, and these had helped the finances. He hoped that a special effort would be made next year, the diamond jubilee year of the society, to increase the membership. The motion was seconded by Mr Crosby Morris and carried. Election of Officers The following office-bearers were elected: —President, Mr W. Downie Stewart; vice-presidents—Messrs E. C. Reynolds, Crosby Morris and J. C. Willis; committee—the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen)-, Messrs T. Elliott, S. P. Leith. R. Fountain, J. R. Dickinson, D. McLennan, W. Cooper, A. Lawrenson,. G. Mathieson, D. C. Cameron. M. C. Henderson, R. D. Stewart and R. Kirk; honorary treasurer, Mr E. C. Reynolds; secretary, Mr E. S. Wilson; honorary veterinary surgeons, Messrs C. V, Dayus and G. McDonald (Balclutha); auditors, Messrs J. S. Mclnnes and Sons.
