TOLL OF THE ROAD
INCREASE IN ACCIDENTS STATISTICS FOR PAST YEAR OVER 4000 INJURED (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. Despite the petrol restrictions 19 lives were lost in road accidents last month, and several hundred were injured, said the Minister of Transport, Mr R. Semple, to-day. This is considerably higher than the average accident loss during the past 10 months. In January, 1939, although no petrol restrictions were in forte, fewer lives were lost on the roads. During the 12 months of last year at least 4149 persons were injured in road accidents. 2000 seriously, and 184 were killed. These figures proved more than ever, said the Minister, the necessity for proper care on the roads, especially during wartime.
