ALEXANDRA The Weather The weather remains particularly dry. A very heavy gale was experienced on Sunday afternoon and did damage to fruit and tomato crops. Women's Bowling The Alexandra women's bowling lour, Mesdames J. H. Smith, A. Cameron, V. H. Gait, and E. G. Aimers, holders of the Wilson Hull Cup, was defeated during last week by a Wanaka team, Mesdames Studholme, Anderson, Stevenson, and McKegg. by 23 points to 6. Waterworks Extension ' On Friday the Alexandra ratepayers voted for the Borough Council's proposal to raise a loan of £3500 for waterworks improvements and extensions. The polling was very small, the voting being for the proposal 76. against 6.Bowling On Saturday evening a successful progressive threes bowling tournament was played, 48 players participating. The winners were: Men's section, W. Hewitt; women's section, Mrs A. K. Hamilton and Mrs W. H Hinton. Personal The Rev. H. W West, minister for the Alexandra-Clyde Presbyterian Church, has been accepted for overseas service as a chaplain with the forces, and will relinquish his local charge at the end of the month. WANAKA The Weather Strong northerly winds continued during the early part of the week, but the weather has been much warmer, and became very hot during the week-end. The rainfall recorded at Wanaka for. the month of January is as follows (last year's figures being given in parentheses):— Rainfall 2.061r> (4.09 in). number of rain days 5 (6) Bowling In the final of the Wanaka men'b bowling championship J. Perrow (two lives) defeated A. Stuart (one life) 19—14. A Diggers' rink from Omakau played the holders of the Diggers' Cup (Wanaka) on the Wanaka green at the week-end Wanaka retained the cup, scores being as follows (Omakau names first): —Naylor. Moran, Naylor. Paterson 17 Davie, Collings, Studholme. Stuart 27. The following rink will represent Wanaka -in the Champion Rinks at Clyde on February 15:—Murdock. Wilson. Collings, Stuart. The third round of the Ladies' Handicap Singles resulted as follows:—Mrs Murdock 21, Mrs Scott 19: Mrs Davie 24, Mrs Anderson 18; Mrs Perrow 21, Mrs Walker 16; Mrs Faulks 26. Home Guard ! The second parade of the Upper Clutha Home Guard was held during the weekend at the Wanaka Station. Members from all parts of the district were present, and there was an attendance of between 70 and 80. Outbreak of Fire Last Tuesday night a fire broke out in Mr R Little’s camp, but was quickly extinguished by a willing band of fire fighters. OUTRAM Town Board At the monthly meeting of the Outram Town Board there were present Messrs D. Ashley (chairman). Hughes, Little, and Watson. An application from the South and West Taieri Home Guard units for the use of the reserve for parades was granted free of charge. A letter was received from the signal and electrical engineer. New Zealand Railways, asking that arrangements be made for the provision of a street light to illuminate the access to the railway houses at Outram. The Scoutmaster ot the West Taieri Troop wrote thanking the board for the use of the hall, and offering the services of the troop to the board. —Received. Mr H. Mcßryde was appointed hall caretaker, sexton and general workman to the board in place of Mr G. Docherty. who is proceeding on active service. It was decided that the reservoir be cleaned out as soon as convenient. Spitfire and Distress Appeals At the February meeting of the Outram Patriotic Committee the treasurer announced that £72 X3s for the Spitfire fund and £66 14s for the London distress fund had been collected in Outram and surrounding districts. Boy Scouts’ Effort The Outram troops ot Scouts have been doing their bit to assist the war effort. They had a piece of ground given to them in which they planted potatoes. They tended the crop, harvested it and cleared the sum of £l7. A pair of binoculars has been bought with the money, and these are to be presented to the navy A suitably inscribed plate is to be affixed, indicating that they are the gift of the Outram Scouts. After the Scouts’ hobby exhibition last year each Scout sold one of the articles he had made, and in this way the troop raised over £3 for patriotic funds.' Home Guard The Home Guard meets weekly on the recreation reserve under Commander A. T. Free. At the last parade the enlistments had reached 94. Ladles’ Knitting Guild The members of the Ladles’ Knitting Guild have resumed their activities for another year. The ladies forwarded 230 articles to the Ounedin centre during the six months they were in operation last year. A case of knitted goods was also forwarded to the Lady Galway Guild for refugees in Britain. St. John Ambulance

The nursing and ambulance division of the St. John Ambulance have resumed activities. They are making arrangements for public demonstrations of first aid, home nursing and A.R.P. work in the recreation reserve on March 1 by teams from the Dunedin divisions.
