MIDDLEMARCH

Home Guard Since his return from Burnham Camp a few weeks ago, where he spent a 10-day refresher course of instruction. Captain H. Jones, who has been appointed company commander of the Mlddlemarch branch of the Home Guard, has lost no time establishing an efficient branch at Mlddlemarch. Classes of instruction for officers and n.c.o.’s have been held in the A. and P. Hall, and Company Commander Jones is delighted with the response and co-opera-tion which he is receiving from members of the local R.S.A., many of whom held high rank during the last war and are still able and willing to come forward for the defence of their country. A further class and parade was held in the hall on Thursday evening, and it was decided that a full parade should be held in the Show Grounds on Wednesday evening, after which parades would be held twice a week, one on Saturday and another on a day to be arranged. The following were recommended as officers and n.c.o.’s:— Lieutenants J. Black, C. Moncur and F. Tucker: n.c.o.’s, Sergeant-major J. James, G. Peat, S, Johnson, G. Gillespie, J. Kirkland. D. B. Craighead, G. Duncan, J. Spratt, R. Campbell and B. Watson. Included in these are two men who hold the Military Medal and one with a French decoration. Company Commander Jones's aim is an efficient unit of over 100 men. Mr F. M. Howell, chairman of the Home Guard Committee and Talerl County representative, undertook to arrange the necessary petrol supply for attending Home Guard parades. Personal Mr H. Jones, who has been appointed company commander for the Mlddlemarch Home Guard, has found it necessary to relinquish his position as pipe-major in the Mlddlemarch Pipe Band, in order to devote all his energies to Home Guard work. Pipe-major R. Campbell has been appointed to succeed Mr Jones.
