BARRED ON SCHOOL COURTS EDUCATION BOARD’S DECISION GENERAL INSTRUCTION TO COMMITTEES The attitude of the Otago Education Board towards Sunday lawn tennis, so far as the courts under its control are concerned, was made clear at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday, when it was agreed to advise all school committees that no playing was to be permitted on school court? on Sundays. “We should take cognisance of the fact." said the chairman, Mr J. Wallace, “that, people are playing on our courts on Sundays. They seem to forget that school courts are not public courts, They were laid down by the committees, with the assistance of the board, and it is for the board, as owner to say who shall play on them-” Some districts had wanted cheap courts, Mr Wallace continued, and players had subscribed a few pounds towards the cost of the courts. The fact remained, however, that they could use the courts only with the board’s approval, “School courts are being used on Sundays throughout o|agohe concluded- “It is being done even in Dunedin. The board should put its foot down and say that school courts are not to be played on on Sundays. I will move that all committees should be advised to that effect,” Mr D. Marshall seconded the motion. Mr D. C. Cameron said he agreed with the chairman’s attitude, but he would ask what was the regulation governing the position. “There is no regulation,” the chairman replied, “but many years ago we adopted a resolution forbidding Sunday tennis on school courts.” The motion was carried,
