AXIS PROPAGANDA
LYING BROADCASTS CONDITIONS IN EGYPT “ SURGING WITH AGITATION ” (British Official Wireless) (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) RUGBY, Oct. 15. (Received Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.) According to reports from Egypt regular readers of A] Misri were surprised on opening their newspapers to see the headline “A 1 Misri Suspended for Ten Days.” Beneath this appeared the following message, broadcast by the Axis: —“ Reports from the Egyptian frontier reveal that Egypt is surging with agitation owing to prohibition by the British authorities of any criticism of their seizure of foodstuffs. A 1 Misri. the organ of the influential Wafd, has been suspended for 10 days for
criticism of the authorities. The Wafd issued a warning that non-co-opei’ation would be declared unless the decision was cancelled.” A 1 Misri, which, of course, has not been suspended, contents itself with brief addition. “ This is the latest lie about Egypt by Italian and German broadcasts, and we publish it without comment.” In fact, there has been no requisitioning or rationing whatever in Egypt; on the contrary, the country is experiencing a minor boom, owing to the British purchase of the entire cotton crop, valued at £30,000,000, and the expenditure of about £20,000,000 by the British fighting services in Egypt.
