HOLLAND IN NAZI CHAINS
Inevitably and relentlessly the Nazi machine clamps down on its victims, says the New York Times. Nothing less than the total wiping out of every vestige of independence of spirit, of every quality that has set one people apart from others, can satisfy the new masters. In the Netherlands, legal processes at first remained undisturbed by the invader. Now, it seems, the Dutch, although defeated, still fail to show proper respect and reverence for the gift of Nazi rule, still have the effrontery to believe themselvs human beings, with human rights and feelings. So all Netherlands citizens wno acl “ against the German nation, people, party individuals, or property, ’ or who commit “crimes against the general interest,” arc now to be tried in German courts to be set up in their country. This is a severe measure, intended to teach them' their place as helots in the new European Utopia. But it remains to be seen whether a people so long disciplined to freedom can learn to prostrate, themselves and whether they will not in the end prove stronger than their masters.
