OCTAGON DUG-OUT

TO BE OPENED AGAIN USE BY PATRIOTIC COUNCIL Commencing to-day, the dug-out in the Octagon will be used each Friday by one or other of the various women's organisations associated with the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council for the sale of produce, cakes and similar goods, the proceeds from which will be devoted to the funds of the council. The dug-out will remain open from 9 a.m. till all the goods on hand are disposed of. An appeal for goods such as cakes, produce, sweets or preserves is made, and these may be left at the dug-out on the days it is open, or during the week at the office of the secretary of the council in Municipal lane. Country residents are especially requested to send in Droduce and it is hoped that the various women's divisions of the Farmers' Union will co-operate. The stall will to-day be in charge of members of the Women's Territorial Association and next Friday it will be run by the Townswomen's Guild. On the following Friday an independent street appeal is to be held and the stall will be closed, but it will be opened, however, on the Saturday morning, when the Dunedin Business and Professional Women's Club will be in charge. The Travel Club will control the stall on August 30.

The dug-out will again be opened on September 13, on which date the Patriotic Council proposes to hold a special street appeal. On this day it is hoped to raise £ 1000 to augment the Service and Dependents' Welfare Fund, which is to be devoted to the rehabilitation and after-care of returned men. This fund now stands at approximately £15,000, but considerably more than this amount will be required.
