SOUTH AFRICAN’S IDEA FORMER DEFENCE MINISTER LONDON, July 8. (Received July 8, at 10 P-m.) The Bloemfontein correspondent of The Times says that Mr O. E. Pirow, the former Minister of Defence, in, a speech, declared it was necessary for South Africa to make separate peace with Italy and Germany. He added: “ Our internal problems cannot be solved unless the country discards the forms of Government introduced by Rhodes and Milner and returns to the days before the Boer War.” One of a series of nationalist meetings of protest against General Smuts’s war policy was held at Bloemfontein. The correspondent says the campaign is failing to gather momentum, despite intensive propaganda.
