ST. KILDA COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the St, Kilda Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J J. Marlow) and Crs E. Longworth, N. D. Anderson, J. H. Hinton, R. S. Brent, W. J. Lovell, T. D. B. Roy, J. C. Cherry, and W. Rutherford. It was decided to draw the attention of the City Council to the great volume of water that was lying along the tram lines in Moreau street, and to ask that this portion of the road be improved. Financial The town clerk reported that the funds of the council showed a credit balance of £990 l4s lid. Inspector’s Report The inspector reported that 49 drivers’ licences had been Issued, and two drivers had been tested. One building permit had been issued The report was adopted. The foreman’s and plumber s reports were adopted without discussion Water Consumption It was reported that the consumption of water for the past fortnight was 2,910,000 gallons, at a cost of £lls 3s 9d. The amount payable to the City Council for the previous fortnight was £ll3 4s 6d. Little Britons The Mayor said that he proposed to appoint the whole council as the committee to look after the children which were coming from Great Britain and who might be allotted to St. Kilda. He said that the 2500 for New Zealand might now be on the water. The borough’s quota would be so small, however, that their difficulty would be not to find homes, but to make a selection of the homes offered. As regarded those children which were not nominated to homes in New Zealand, they would be delivered to their respective places through the British Government, which was to take all the responsibility and liability and pay tire expenses of transport.
