ARMY RUGBY

MATCH FOR DUNEDIN FURTHER ATTEMPT BEING MADE OTAGO UNION’S ATTITUDE The Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union decided last evening to make a further attempt to obtain a match with a military team at Dunedin. An application is to be made for a match between the Trentham and Burnham camp teams, or, failing that, a isit by a Burnham team to play Otago at Dunedin. In explanation of the refusal ot an invitation already extended to send a Burnham team -o play in Dunedin, the adjutant of the Burnham camp wrote that a “amplete schedule of training and sports had been arranged and it would not be possible to accept the invitation without interrupting the schedule. The chairmen (Mr D. C. Jolly) remarked that if it were possible to send a team to Invercargill, it was only fair that Dunedin should have a match. It was said at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Union that it was hoped to have military teams visiting throughout New Zealand. The Trentham and Burnham teams were to play a match, Mr D. M. Spedding said, but it had not yet been decided where R would be played. He suggested that a request for that game should be made through the New Zealand Union, and that if that game should not be available, a further attempt should be made to have a matchat Dunedin between Otago and a Burnham team. This was agreea to. ” Wellington and Christchurch are getting the cream of the military football,” the chairman added. “We should be entitled to some of it.” Spectator’s Apology Accepted A letter from a referee, Mr G. W. Simon, stated that the spectator whom he had reported for making insulting remarks during the Southern-Pirates match on Saturday week had apologised for his behaviour and had expressed his willingness to assisl the union to have the matter cleared up. The spectator had apologised on his own initiative, and the referee expressed the opinion that he had learnt his lesson. A letter from the spectator himself admitted making the remarks attributed to him. and expressed his sincere apologies to the union and to the referee. “The only excuse I can offer,” he wrote, “ is that I was carried away by the actions of the crowd and did not think I was doing any harm until I was spoken to by the referee.” He gave his word of honour that he would not offend in this manner again, and he offered to make amends in any other way required by the union. The spectator had apologised profusely, the chairman said, and he was prepared to appear before the Management Committee if it wished him to do so. “He has made a manly apology,” Mr D. M. Spedding said, and on his motion the apology was accepted, and it was decided to take no further action, Mr W, J. Pearson said that the Southern Club would conduct its investigation independent of the union’s inquiry. In connection with a further incident of insults to a referee by a spectator, the Alhambra Club acknowledged receipt of the union’s inquiry, and reported that an investigation was to be made. Accordingly, the matter was held over. Junior Player Suspended A Green Island club player, who was ordered off in the Green Island-Dun-edin Fourth Grade match on Saturday, was suspended for one playing Saturday. Transfers were granted to A. R. Harvey, from Auckland Training College to the Union Club and T. A. Milburn. from the Palmerston Club to Southern. Mr B. Collie wrote accepting the union’s invitation to fill the vacancy on the Representative Selection Committee caused by the departure foi military camp of Mr C. G. Gibbons.
