Mrs Adams presided over the monthly meeting of the Heriot Insti tute on Thursday last. The motto was "If you cannot have the best, make the best of what you have," and the roll call, "Beauty spots I have visited in New Zealand." An instructive address on "Astronomy" was given by Mr Hodgkin. of Moa Flat. Mrs Sim who has often placed her rocm at the institute's disposal for committee meet ings, was presented with a small token of appreciation The competitions resulted:—Scenic snapshots—Mrs Camp bell 1, Mrs Sharp 2, Mrs Herbert 3 Knitting—Mrs Herbert 1, Mrs, Sharp 2 Mrs Campbell 3. Bloom—Mrs Sharp 1, Mrs Edie and Mrs Foster (equal) 2 The hostesses were Mesdames Brown lie, Barclay, B. Baxter, and E. Baxter

•Y. » * The June monthly meeting of the Kyeburn Institute was presided over by Mrs Heln. The motto was, "Kind hearts are the gardens, kind deeds the fruits," and the roll call, ' A humorous story." Mrs Horn gave an interesting demonstration on the making of shopping and knitting bags and also on the making of slippers from felt hats. A competition for hand-knitted socks resulted:—Mrs Strode 1, Miss Coyle 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Carey, Crutchley, and Heln. .

The monthly meeting of the Kuriwao Institute was held on Saturday last, Mrs Matheson presiding. The motto was, " There is nothing so kindly as kindness and nothing so royal as truth," and the roll call, " How women may work for peace." It was moved after discussing an important resolution that the general conference be not held. Mem. bers agreed to send a parcel of clothing to refugees. The competitions resulted:—Pikelets Mrs Nelson 1, Mr s Matheson 2; flower—Mrs McDonald 1, Mrs Matheson 2. Mrs Nelson read an account of the life of General Freyberg. Mesdames Hurt and. Blue acted as hostesses. '

The Naseby Institute held its June meeting on Tuesday, Mrs Tallentire occupying the chair. The motto was, "A patch f blue in the darkest sky, look at it, and it will grow." and the roll call, " Household hints." An interesting readinp on "Women Behind the Limelj»ht" was given by Mrs Brown. Arrangements were made for four parcels to be jent to the soldiers. An amusing competition—>' the wedding of the songs "—was won by Mrs Tallentire. Other competitions resulted:— Nut loaf—Mrs Creighton 1, Mrs Smith and Mrs Stuart (equal) 2; one night's programme—Mrs Tallentire 1, Mrs Stuart 2. & The hostesses were Mrs Jacob and Mrs Turnbull..

Mrs Mays presided at the monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the North Otago Federation on Friday last. Arrangements were made for the executive to hold a street sale of mystery parcels, given by institutes, on June 6, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the Red Cross fund. It was decided to hold the drama festival on August 8 and 9, half the profits to be granted to war purposes funds. Mesdames Mays and Douthwaite, and Miss Ross were appointed an Emergency Committee. Mrs A. A. Webster (voluntary organiser) conducted a school for officers, for which there was a large attendance from all districts. Mrs Webster's instructions were followed with keen interest, and she was accorded a vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was provided by members of the executive.

The Macandrew Bay Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday last Mrs Vickers presiding. The motto was " May our eyes be no keener when we look upon the faults of others than when we survey our own," and the roll call "Economy hint." Tenminute demonstrations were given by three members—Mrs Butler (showing the making of eggshell flowers and a coal flower) Mrs Stapleton (tinfoil pictures), and Mrs Turnbull (wool necklaces). The competitions resulted:—Three varieties sweets—Mrs Lang 1, Mrs Stapleton 2; bloom—Mrs Ryan 1, Mrs Lang and Mrs Ryan (equal) 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Webber, Small, Miller, Turnbull, Lang, Anderson, and S. Bewley. Articles collected from members for the Winter Show bay were on display on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Wills, who has resigned her place on the committee, was presented with a piece of cut crystal in appreciation of her work.

Mrs Logie presided at the June meeting of the Stirling Institute. "What annoys me most," was the roll call. The competitions resulted: —Sponge roll, Mrs W. Logiel; three Belgian biscuits. Mrs Fairbairn 1. Mrs J. Logie demonstrated on eggshell work, and was thanked by Mrs Farquharson. In the golden thread series, "Beginning Again" was the subject of an interesting article. The motto was, "It is easy to make a good resolution: to keep it is the trouble."

The monthly meeting of the Kaka Point Institute was presided over by Miss Bates. The motto was "In disagreeing if is not necessary to be disagreeable " and the roll call " Recipe for a hot tea dish." A guessing competition was won by Mrs Rein and a memory test by Mrs Aitkenhead. The hostesses were Mrs Rein and Mrs Aitkenhead Another competition, " decorated coat hanger," resulted— Mrs Johnston 1, Mrs Aitkenhead 2, Mrs Rein and Miss Shiels (equal) 3.
