WAR FINANCE
ro THE EDITOR Sir,—A letter in yesterday’s issue, signed by “Practical,” states that the supporters of the National Party have advocated conscription of wealth for the past 10 years. He qualified this by a statement that man is wealth, and implied these two are not separate : itities —with which I would disagree. The most equitable way to finance the war, while human sacrifice is being called for, is for an “ all-in ” policy, as proposed by the Labour Government, wherein all main sources of wealth are to be derived from .unearned increment and from business profits, aided by the control of machinery, .plant, and buildings used for productive purposes. The method of financing the war effort-by taxation increases the cost, of living, is inequitable, and entails a burden on those least able to bear it. “Practical” says; that “money is not wealth,” but without money you cannot buy anything, and production is useless.—l am, etc., > Labourite.
