DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY

RESIGNATION OF CLERK PADRE WITH THIRD ECHELON A meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery was held last night, the moderator (the Rev. N. E. Oakley) presiding. Call Sustained The call to the Rev. H. Hogg from Whakatane, Bay of Plenty, was sustained by presbytery, members of which spoke in warm praise of Mr Hogg’s work during his ministry of four years and a-quarter in the Opoho Presbyterian Church. Refugee Children The Rev. A. M. Elliffe, superintendent of the Presbyterian Social Service Association, reported that the association had considered the proposal that New Zealand should give shelter to 25,000 children from Great Britain for the period of the war, and possibly longer. Very little information concerning the details of the scheme were available, but it was .thought that Otago and Southland should concentrate on Scottish children. The proposal as a whole, however, provided an opportunity for lovers of children to carry out, important war work. It was necessary for some organisation to represent the Church, and the Presbyterian Social Service Association was prepared, with the sanction of presbytery, to assume that responsibility.'—lt was decided to appoint the Presbyterian Social Service Association to represent the Church in any development of the proposal. Mr Mitchell’s Resignation The clerk of presbytery (the Rev. H. A. Mitchell), who has been attached as padre to the third echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, tendered his resignation and also applied for leave of absence from the charge of the Rpslyn Presbyterian Church. His resignation was accepted with regret, and leave of absence .was granted. It was also decided to prepare a special minute expressing appreciation of Mr Mitchell’s services as clerk of presbytery, and wishing him God’s guidance in his new duties, and a safe return; The Rev. A. M Elliffe was appointed interim-clerk in his stead. ,
