CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION

LECTURE BY MISS V. M. BARRON “Wanderings in GaUl” was the subject of a lecture given in the Museum lecture-room on Monday evening by Miss V. M. Barron, who returned from Europe at the beginning of this; year. The president, Mr W. S. Morrell; presided over a good attendance of members and friends, and in their name thanked Miss Barron for a lecture which had been as attractive as it had been informative. Miss Barron gave an _ account of some visits to Roman sites in Provence and the Rhineland. She spoke of the magnificent Roman theatre and triumphal arch at Orange, of the town of Vaison-la-Romame, not far from Avignon, where excavations have revealed a Roman city of considerable importance, of trips to Arles and Nimes through thq lovely countryside of southern - France, with its vines and olives and the pink of almond- blossom against the creamy coloured tones of fields and roads and houses, Then there was an old Roman road and its milestones near Mentone, starting off from a monument. erected .in honour of’ Augustus. In. August there was a day among Roman ruins at Treves, the' great' -Porta . Nigra, the baths and bridge and arena—a peaceful occupation, for the last day spent in Germany The lecture was illustrated by photofraphs and some moving pictures of ’reves. " . ■■ ■, T
