TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

AFTERNOON TEA AT “ CORSTORRHINE- ” In the pleasant winter sunshine of last Saturday afternoon Lady .Sidey was “at home” at Corstorphme to the members of the New Zealand Union of Townswomen’s Guilds (Uunedin branch). The function, which was held in lieu of the ordinary monthly meeting had been arranged to give the members an opportunity to meet each other in social intercourse. Lady Sidey received the guests, who numbered about 200, wearing a distinctive gown of heavy black crepe de chine trimmed with white braiding. After spending some time admiring the grounds the guests were entertained at afternoon tea in the dining-room, which was tastefully decorated with gold and yellow chrysanthemums. Later they assembled m the drawing-room, where pink camellias had been effectively arranged, and enjoyed several musical items. Adjourning to the billiard-room the guests, under the direction of Mrs Sutherland Ross (representing the Navy League) inspected a display of knitted garments which were ready for forwarding to the crews of minesweepers attached to the Royal Navy Opportunity was taken by the president of the guild (Mrs R. S. Black) to thank Lady Sidey for entertaining the members and giving them the opportunity to meet each other. Much of the success of the guild’s work, she said, was due to the efforts of the three vice-presidents—Lady Sidey, Mrs J. A* Cook, and Professor A. G. Strong—all of whom had taken a keen interest in it from the beginning. Mrs Black explained that the guild had originally been formed in London by Queen Mary and two years ago one of her Ladies-in-Waiting had come to New Zealand to found the Dominion Townswomen’s Guild, the object of which was to work for the common good. The Dunedin branch was incorporated in the medical and public health section of the Emergency Precautions Scheme, and most of the. members had been registered as willing to undertake any voluntary service that might be required of them in time or need. Lady Sidey. in reply, thanked the performers and soloists for the delightful items which they had rendered. Those who had contributed to the programme were Miss Ruth Moore (piano solos). Mrs L. Beaumont, Mrs Hartley and Miss Dora Drake (vocal solos), while the accompaniments were Mayed PV Mrs H. C. Campbell and Mrs R.
