GIRL ASSAULTED
INCIDENT IN MOTOR CAR MAN SENT TO GAOL (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 14. For common assault committed upon a young woman in a motor cir on a lonely road near Papatoetoe late on the night of May 26, Robert Eric McCormick, aged 27. a labourer, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour by Mr F. H. Leviem S.M., in the Police Court. He pleaded guilty. The police said that at the request .of a soldier friend McCormick consented to drive the girl from Papakura camp back to Auckland. Nearing Papatoetoe, he turned down a side road, telling her he was going to see a friend. When the girl attempted to jump out he pushed her down and knocked a tooth out. When the car stopped she got out and screamed. He got her back into the car, and when two men appeared he drove off. They chased and overtook him and got the girl away from him. Passing sentence, the magistrate remarked that he could not understand why McCormick was not charged more seriously.
