BALCLUTHA Mayor Called Up Mr J. H. Stevenson, Mayor of Balclutha, who for some years has held an air pilot’s licence and who volunteered for service some time ago, has received word that he has been called up for home service at Levin aerodrome, with the rank of flightlieutenant. Mr Stevenson will leave for Levin on Tuesday. It has been arranged by the Borough Council that the Deputy Mayor (Mr J. R. Copland) will carry on during the absence of the Mayor. The Mayor put himself entirely in the council’s hands and said that if it were desired he would resign his position, but councillors would not entertain such a suggestion. Rugby Football At a meeting of the Management Committee of the South Otago Sub-union, the transfer of W. McLaren from Training College to Gatlins was approved. It was decided to start a Third Grade cup competition on June 22, and also a Fourth Grade competition if sufficient teams offered. Sudden Death Mrs Eliza Cunningham, widow of Mr George Cunningham, was found dead on Thursday morning in the kitchen of her house at Kaka Point, where she had lived alone for the past 20 years. The body was fully clothed and it appeared that the deceased had been about to light a fire in the kitchen range when she had suffered a seizure. A doctor who was called in gave the cause of death as cerebral haemorrhage. Mrs Cunningham, who was aged 89 years, had resided in the district for 80 yeai’s. Personal Mr J. R. Copland has been appointed the Clutha County Council and the Balclutha Borough representative on the Otago Electric Power Board, in place of Mr A. E. Russell, who has resigned.
