FARMERS' INTERESTS NORTH OTAGO A. AND P. -ASSOCIATION Mr S. Gillies (president) occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday afternoon. It was decided to make g. contribution' of £5 to the Red Cross Appeal. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Community Sing.—A total of £6 14s 7d was realised from the weekly community sing in the Opera House on Thursday night. The leaders were Messrs J. Weir and J. McLean, and both kept the sing going at a good pace. Pupils of Miss Gladys Doran’s School of Dancing entertained with items during the sing. The response t'o the auctioneering of goods contributed was good. Mr George Dorward presided at the piano and Mr J. Campbell supplied music for the national dances. At the conclusion of the sing, the leaders thanked those present for their attendance, and hoped for a larger attendance next Thursday. Duntroon Bed Cross.—The weekly euchre party of the Duntroon branch of the Red Cross was held on Wednesday evening, when there was a good attendance of players. A pleasant evening was spent, the prizes being won by Mrs I Hill and Mr A, Francis respectively. Wesley Ladies’ Guild.—Mrs F. Familton was in the chair at a meeting of the Wesley Ladies’ Guild recently. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs.lngram in her bereavement. Musical items were rendered by Mesdames Taylor, Martyn and Jones, and the meeting closed with the singing of the doxology. Duntroon Red Cross.—The weekly euchre party held by the Duntroon branch of the Red Cross was well attended, prizes being won by Mrs J. Hill and Mr M Francis. A sewing bee has been formed, and intending members are requested to meet at Mrs Marshall’s residence every Tuesday at 2 p.m. An urgent appeal was being made for all kinds of left-off clothing which could be made into garments for refugee children, and any of this material could be left at Sutherland’s or Fyfe’s stores. Five Forks Red Cross.—On Tuesday night the Five Forks branch of the Red Cross held a very successful extended social in the school. Prize-winners of the euchre were Miss V. Ellis and Mr W Ellis, consolations going to Mr J. Parkhill and Miss H. Campbell, Mrs Ellis and Mr Miles supplied music for the dancing, and Mr J. Kininmont was M.C. Ne,wl)orough Ladies’ Guild.—The fifth annual meeting of the Newborough Ladies’ Guild was hold recently, when the officers were re-elected, and Mesdames Burridge, Blacklock and Corlett were elected to the committee. The Ven. Archdeacon Russell conducted the opening service and congratulated the guild on attaining its highest membership since its Inception. PERSONAL A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs J. Paton, Papakaio, was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the North Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The president (Mr S. Gillies) stated that Mrs Paton had been a staunch member of the association for nearly 50 years, and her death was a great loss to the district.
