MR A. TYNDALL’S SUCCESSOR MR C. H. BENNEY APPOINTED (From Our Special Reporter) WELLINGTON, Mar. 31. Mr C. H. Benney, accountant in the Mines Department, Wellington, has been appointed Acting Under-secre-tary for Mines, in succession to Mr A. Tyndall, who is now judge of the Arbitration Court. Mr Benney, who is only 3b years of age, belongs to a family which has been associated with mining in New Zealand since the pioneering days, as his father, Mr J. H. Benney. is manager of the Golden Dawn Company, near Waihi, and his grandfather was also in charge of mines in the Hauraki goldfields. Mr Benney. who was born at Kaumati. in the Hauraki district, was educated at the Komata School and the Thames High School, where he won a junior university scholarship. In 1919 he joined the civil service, entering .the Mines Department at Wellington. He continued his studies at the Wellington Technical College, and in 1926 he completed his professional accountancy examinations. Serving in all branches, he remained with the Mines Department until 1930. bv which time he had travelled over all the mining fields in the Dominion. He then joined the Justice Department, and was appointed to take charge of the accounts at the institutional farm at Waikeria, near Te Awamutu. He returned to the Mines Department in 1937 as accountant.
Mr Benney has taken a leading part in the affairs of the Public Service Association. He has been chairman of the Wellington section, a member of the executive, and vice-president of the association, and has also served on a large number of special committees in the public service.
