NEED FOR NEW SPIRIT SOME THINGS DESCRIBED AS " ROTTEN " In this-beautiful country there were some things which were "rotten," and he would be failing in his duty if he did not mention them, said Dr Halliday Sutherland, British author lecturer and doctor, in a talk to the English Speaking Union in Wellington. He dealt with three matters to illustrate his contention. Recently, he said, there was a Japanese steamer unloading cargo at a New Zealand port, and the captain and the local shipping agent were watching operations. The captain asked, "Do they always work like that?" The agent replied that he was afraid they did. The Japanese then remarked, "Any country where men work like that is already conquered." Then the day before a Cabinet Minister, aged 67. had in 10 minutes done work that two men required a day to complete. ,v \-•..'.', But the most grievous blot on the country was the deliberate murder of some 3000 unborn children annually, a crime which cried out to God for redress. He had done his best to arouse public interest on this subject. He had been told in some quarters that his addresses were controversial; on some points, so were the Ten Commandments. There was nothing controversial, in his opinion, in advocating that the existing criminal laws be enforced. There must be a return to the moral standards of the pioneers who made the country great. Unless there was, he could see nothing but destruction ahead.
