The St. Clair branch of the Home Economics Association held its first meeting for the year on Tuesday evening at the.'home-of Mrs Paul, of Hobson street, Mrs Main presiding. A general discussion took place dealing with the effort to be made to help the Finns, and suggestions for the year's work.

Miss Lyllian Davis, whose marriage to Mr Douglas Milburn will take place at Easter, was entertained at a "gift" evening, given in her honour by Miss Ruth Harvey, of St. Leonard's. Blue streamers and bowls' of • pink sweet peas formed a pretty colour scheme, and a set supper, by. candle-light gave a hovel touch to the evening. . A delightful afternoon tea party was held at the Watea Croquet Club's lawns on Wednesday in honour of the following members who' were successful hi the Otago croquet tournament: Mesdames J. Robertson and Jv O'Donnell (winners of the A Grade Championship Doubles), Mrs G. Little' (who, with Mrs Latimer, Balclutha, won the B Grade Championship Doubles), Mrs P. Knox (winner of the McDonald Cup, for the level Singles), and Mrs N. Anderson (runner-up in the A Grade Championship Singles). Mesdames Wilson, McClatchy, Palmer, Knox, J. Henry and Miss Mee were also honoured, being members of the interclub team which won the B Grade Shield. Each was presented with a floral spray. # * *

The first meeting for the year of the Maori Hill branch of the League of Mothers was held on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs C. V. Smith presided •over a.good attendance. Mrs G.-H. Sed"dori gave an interesting account of a league meeting she had attended in the Assembly Hall at .the Exhibition; Three new "members;.-were Enrolled. Mrs McQueen sang ; "Auld Scotch Sangs - and "Comin' Through the Rye," and the Glee Club gave the anthem "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." The speaker was the Rev. .W. Abernethy. Owing to her imminent departure for Christchurch Mrs G. D. Smith tendered her resignation as president, The good wishes of the branch and. the regret felt by members at losing Mrs Smith, were suitably conveved by Mrs Abernethy. The cneaker for the evening was the Rev S" D. Baird. who gave an inspiring talk embodying one of the first rules of the league—" Obedience in Children and Self-respect in Parents." The speaker stressed the fact that as children were great imitators, parents should set a good example to them by practising self-restraint and discipline and bv respecting and understanding the child's outlook on its work and nlay. Two buses conveyed representatives of the various branches of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union to Waikouaiti on Tuesday last to meet the branches of Waikouaiti and Flag Swamp. Their joint meeting was held in the Sunday School Hall, which was nicely decorated for the occasion. Mrs Dunri (president of the Dunedin branch) occupied the chair, and was supported by Mrs Stevely and Mrs Wsddell. Mrs Waddell (Sister Christabel) gave a fine inspirational address on different aspects of P.W.M.U. work. Mrs Lang, vice-president of the Waikouaiti branch, thanked the speaker. A table of Maori curios and some literature met with a ready sale.

The Kaikorai branch of the League of Mothers held its monthly, meeting on Wednesday last, Mrs McCrostie presiding. The subject of an address,„given by Mr G. Wilkinson was "Music in the Home." The speaker said that children should be encouraged to appreciate good music not because of the title or the composer's name, but for music's sake and because they thought it was good and enjoyed it. Mrs Bauld thanked the speaker. The thought for the month, brought by Mrs Duncan, was, "So many Gods, so many creeds, so many path's that wind and wind, when all this old world needs is just the art -of being kind."

The Girl Guide movement in New Zealand has suffered a loss by the death of Miss Nita McHardy, of Aramoana, Waipawa. Miss McHardy was a. prominent, figure in the work of .the New Zealand Girl Guides' Association, /and was known in its sister organisations in many parts of the world. On her various trips abroad she attended any guide activities taking place in the countries she visited, and she brought back to the New Zealand guides new ideas and fresh inspirations. In 1934 she represented New Zealand at the World Conference of .Girl: Guides and Girl Scouts, held at Adelbaden, Switzerland. Three years later she visited Australia as New Zealand delegate at the first Australian and New Zealand conference for guide trainers held in Sydney. On Miss McHardy s retirement from active guiding in 1938 she was elected a life member of the Dominion council. * w . *..-..'-.

The first monthly meeting for the year of the Queenstown branch of the P.W.M.U. was held on March 14, when Miss Hamilton presided over a splendid attendance of members, and introduced the speaker for the 1 afternoon. Mrs'John Ingles, who'gave an inspiring address on her work as a missionary nurse amongst the lepers of Ethiopia. A financial report given by Mrs Davies showed an excellent amount raised towards the mission quota. Miss M. Gray gave a detailed report of the recent PA. meeting held at Alexandra. It was decided to hold a sale of harvest festival produce on April 8, and a chrysanthemum show in May in of church funds. Miss Hamilton and Mrs Miller agreed to act as convener and secretary respectively, and the members of the spring show committee, with the addition of Miss E. Davies. were appointed as committer members.

About 50 members of the Otago Provincial Council of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers Union met in the Y.W.C.A. Hall on Monday afternoon to welcome the Dominion president. Mrs Noel Adams, who is visiting the southern provincials Members of the Otago Provincial Executive and of the Papanui, Otakou, Portobello, Henley, Berwick, Waikouaiti, Warrington and Dunedin branches were present. Mrs W Annan. Otago provincial president, welcomed Mrs Adams to Otago end presented her with a spray of roses Mrs Adams thanked the members for their welcome, and spoke of a number of aspects of the division work, with special reference to the difficulties of the present time and the need for carrying on and taking part in helping the Empire and the Government in >very possible way. Mrs W. Elliott thanked Mrs Adams for her talk, and endorsed what she had said about the tieed-for-carrying on the work of the Women's Division. Following afternoon •-.' tea. members were given an opportunity of meeting Mrs Adams and of talking with her.
