Mr Don Paterson has returned from a visit to Wellington, Dr D. G. McMillan, M.P., left for Wellington on Thursday to attend the annual conference of the Labour Party. The Rev. George S. King, StrathTaieri, went north by the midnight train on Thursday en route for Wellington and Wanganui on holiday. Privates A. D. R. Bain and N. Johnson were the recipients of presentations at a combined meeting of the Broad Bay School Social Committee and Lawn Tennis Club. Both are members of the second echelon. Private Bain was previously chairman of the School Social Committee, and both he and Private Johnson were members of the Lawn Tennis Club. Group-captain L. M. Isitt, representative of the New Zealand Government on the Advisory Board set up to adminster the Empire air scheme in Canada, has left for Vancouver. Mr 9. R. Morrison, M.A., has taken up his duties as tutor-organiser for adult education in Taranaki. Mr Morrison, who is a graduate of Otago University, has just returned to New Zealand after carrying out an extensive survey of agrarian problems in the Pacific area for a book which he is preparing.

Northbound passengers by Union Airways on Thursday morning were Miss L. Alhbrandte, Miss D. Wallace, and Mr and Mrs A. Paul for Christchurch, Miss N. McGhie, Mr H. C. Robjohns, and Miss N. Given for Wellington, Mr A. W. Broad and Miss E. Giddings for Palmerston North, and Mr A. Currie for Auckland.

Major Gordon Rich, N.Z.M.C., has been appointed to the New Zealand Convalescent Depot, and he will go overseas with the second echelon of the Expeditionary Force. Major Rich has had long territorial service and he commanded the 3rd Field Ambulance in Christchurch for three years.

At a social last Saturday evening, members of the Anderson's Bay School Committee, the school staff, and friends met in honour of Mr F. G. L. Forester, who has been headmaster of the school since 1934, and who has retired on superannuation. The chairman of the committee (Mr J. C. H. Somerville) made a presentation of a travelling rug to Mr Forester and a crystal vase to Mrs Forester. He expressed the appreciation of the school and district of Mr Forester's services, and wished him a long and happy retirement Mr Forester, replying, thanked the committee and staff for their co-operation during his term of office. The new headmaster (Mr C. Kibblewhite) and Mrs Kibblewhite were welcomed to the district. A few days before the function the school pupils had presented Mr Forester with a fireside chair and Mrs Forester was given a bouquet. Members of the Muriel Caddie Piano Accordion Band held a social evening in Maxims Tea Rooms on Wednesday evening to bid farewell to one of their members, Mr W. Mitchell, who is a member of the Air Force. Miss Caddie presented Mr Mitchell with a wallet, and extended to him all good wishes from the members of the band and herself, and trusted that he would return safely and again take his place in the band. Mr Mitchell thanked the members for their gift and good wishes. and paid a tribute to Miss Caddie for the great assistance that she had given him.

The staff of the Otago Co-operative Milk Supply Company, Ltd., "met on Wednesday to bid farewell to the secretary (Mr Ivan E. Sutherland), who has accepted a position with the Dunedin Wholesale Milk Supply, Ltd. The manager (Mr W. Roseveare) expressed the regret of the staff at losing the services of Mr Sutherland, and presented him with an inscribed wristlet watch. Previously the directors met Mr Sutherland and presented him with a substantial cheque as a farewell gift from the board. Opportunity was taken at each meeting to introduce the new secretary, Mr A. Fulton.
