“NO COMPLAINTS”
With appetites sharpened by healthy physical jerks done in keen salt air, the bugle call for meals was eagerly awaited on the transports, but there was no undue scrambling to get to the tables. Good manners predominated, but there was little left when the lads went on deck to smoke their pipes or cigarettes. And when it came to “smokes” the boys considered they were “on a win.” Good cigarettes cost 3d for a packet of 10. English light beer was 5d a pint, and each man was allowed two pints a day—usually consumed before or after tea while lolling on the deck in the cool of the evening.
