BANANA SUPPLIES
BIG ISLAND SHIPMENT ARRIVAL AT AUCKLAND (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. With the arrival at Auckland of 25,688 cases of bananas from the Islands, the present extreme shortage of the fruit throughout the Dominion will be alleviated to a large extent. The fruit has arrived in good condition. , In recent weeks the supply of bananas has not been sufficient to meet the seasonal -heavy demand for salads and other summer dishes. • It was hoped to overcome the position fully with a shipment last week and the latest consignment, but unfortunately 7000 cases out of 9000 in last week's shipment had to be jettisoned owing to a failure in the refrigeration plant of the steamer which brought the fruit to the Dominion. • While, therefore, the latest shipment will go a long way towards fulfilling the country's requirements, the position is not yet entirely satisfactory. It is hoped, however, to overcome any remaining shortage with shipments expected at an early date.
