GRADE CRICKET

ONE DAY MATCHES SOME FAST SCORING GRANGE AND UNIVERSITY WIN The heavy rain which had fallen the previous Saturday and had caused the postponement of all games, resulted In the second-day matches held on Saturday being confined to one day. The rules provide in these circumstances that each side is to have an equal period at the wickets —that is, if the batting side does not declare before is appointed time for closing its . innings—and some fastscoring cricket was witnessed, the batsmen, in many instances, however, evidently considering that the means justified the end. Every batsman, naturally enough, desires to score runs, but the manner in which he scores them has also to be considered. There was an element of “slap dash," hit-or-miss batting in many instances on Saturday. , A Where both sides could not complete their innings a draw was registered, but many cricketers left the field-on Saturday under the impression that where the team still batting, when stumps were drawn, had not reached ‘the total of the team batting first it had been defeated. The Dunedin batsman Tobin, with 91 to his credit, made the top score in local senior cricket, and he got his runs well. H. Cameron, the Cansbrook B batsman, also shaped well to secure 61. Carisbrook tried no fewer than seven bowlers. University secured a straight-out win against Kaikorai, despite the fact that Allcott took six wickets for ”6 for Kaikorai. Gowland and Morrison quickly went through the Kaikorai team, whose hihgest scorer was McGregor with 25. Old Boys and Carisbrook A drew, though “ time ” no doubt prevented Old Boys from securing a straight-out win. Dickinson played a prominent part in the batting and bowling of Old Boys, as he scored 44 runs and took six wickets for 72 runs. Moloney (51) and Fraser (53) were the only two batsmen to make a stand for Carisbrook A, and Moloney look five Old Boys’ wickets for 87 runs. Grange, who declared with nine wickets down, had a comfortable win over Albion. Payhe (55) and Henderson (59) were the highest scorers for Grange, and McSkimming (45) for Albion. The bowling honours rested with Lemin, who bowled out five Albion batsmen for 41 runs. A DRAWN MATCH OLD BOYS’ FAST SCORING Scoring 196 in its first innings in the one-day match at Tonga Park on Saturday, Old Boys came close to gaining a win. over Carisbrook A, which could score only 152 runs for the loss of nine wickets during its share of the afternoon. Due to a fast innings of 44 runs by Dickinson, who hit three 6’s and three 4’s, and useful scores by Otway (34), Leader (28), and Edwards (24), Old Boys scored their 108 runs in two hours. Moloney was the most succesful bowler, and took five wickets for 87 runs, but the chief feature of Carisbrook’s display in the field was the success of Hercus, who stumped four batsmen. Carisbrook found Old Boys’ bowling difficult to score off. Dickinson was getting plenty of pace with the wind, and he and his colleagues bowled to- an offfield. Moloney played a good innings for 51 runs, and Fraser scored 53 by sound batting, but the rate of scoring was slow. Dickinson finished up with six wickets for 72 runs. UNIVERSITY v. KAIKORAI WIN For STUDENTS’ TEAM A fresh breeze blew across the Bishopscourt ground during the match between . University and Kaikorai, which was won bv the students’ team. University took first strike and had 167 runs up for the loss of nine wickets when the innings was closed. Kaikorai faded to make a stand and all were out for 109 at 6 p.m. when play was concluded. Toomey topped the scoring for Universitv with 35. sharing the honours with Lawson, who had 31 runs on when he was run out. Rennie also contributed a useful 25. Allcott did good service for Kaikorai, accounting for six. wickets for 76 runs, while Rennick and Constable each took one. Holden and Allcott opened for Kaikorai with Morrison and Falvey bowling. The former succumbed to a straight ball from Morrison with his score at 11, and Mexted and Allcott each went down for six. McGregor looked as though he might make a stand, and carried his bat for 25. at which stage he sent a catch to Falvey off the latter’s own bowling. At this time. Kaikorai lost wickets quickly. Gowland taking four in succession. Boock and Rennick were batting steadily at the end with about 60 runs needed, but Boock' was dismissed by Morrison with his score at 13. OUTRIGHT WIN GRANGE BEATS ALBION Grange secured an outright win over Albion in a game that attracted considerable interest at Logan Park. Grange, batting first, scored 211 for the loss of nine wickets before the time limit of two hours and a-quarter expired, Albion following with a. total of 137 s the "last wicket falling some 20 minutes before time. For Grange, outstanding innings were played by Payne and Henderson, who scored 55 and 59 respectively. Payne’s play was particularly attractive. A rather surprising feature was the manner in which the Otago representatives—Monteith, Chettleburgh. and Elmes—failed to shine Albion started well, putting on the first 50 runs in less than three-quarters of an hour and not losing the second wicket until a score of 70 had been reached, McSkimming being responsible for a useful innings. After that, however, the wickets fell fairly quickly, and it soon became obvious that Albion’s only hope was for a draw. The batsmen Were not afraid to strike out right until the finish, and the game ended in an outright win for Grange, Albion’s last wicket falling with the score at 137. CARISBROOK * PUNEDIN

A DRAWN GAME Carisbrook B met Dunedin at Carisbrook, the game ending in a draw. Talbot and Cameron opened the innings for Carisbrook, and they both gave a good exhibition of sound batting and smart running between the wickets. Talbot was the first to go. He got right in front of a delivery from Tobin m an effort to turn the ball to leg, and was out Ibw. Cameron continued to bat freely, and included in his score were two sixes and five fours. After Cameron’s dismissal the batting was not so attractive, some of the players being inclined to sacrifice style in an effort to score runs. Extras accounted for no fewer than 35 runs. The Carisbrook captain declared at half past three. Had it not been for a very fine innings by Tobin, who went in first and had scored 91 beforefhe succumbed to a fast delivery from Nimmo, Dunedin would have probably been all out early in the afternoon. Tobin had batted so well and so confidently—even allowing that the seven Carisbrook bowlers tried did not carry much sting in their attack—that the spectators would have been just as gratified as the batsman himself had he obtained the coveted century. Robertson, who was suffering from slight indisposition, secured his 43 in his usual sound style, his off side play being particularly good. A smart return from the field, which struck the wicket, caused his downfall. Torrance was out to a “ red hot ” catch which Nimmo 1 took at forward leg. Macassey was the only other batsman to get into double figures. < Details: — CARISBROOK B First Innings Talbot, Ibw, b Tobin 38 H. Cameron, b Hudson 61 McMullan, b Donnelly 20 Cavanagh.
