SCHOOL SPORTS MEETING -v UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER m GOOD PERFORMANCES !> ■ ’ r , ‘‘‘iiJthoijgh they were held In unfavourable weather, the annual athletic sports of the Christian Brothers’ School at the Caledonian Ground/yesterday -were very successful, and some excellent performances were put up. The ground was heavy, and the sprint events were run agiiihst a fresh north-easterly breeze, while Intermittent rain during the early plaitt of the afternoon made the conditions even more unpleasant. The senior cup, for which there were; fottr entries, was won by H„ Velnt, with a total of 23 points. He is a good allrotlnder and besides winning both sprints anij coming second in the 440 Yards and Half-mile, he gained third place in the

long and high jumps and won the Shot Putt. J. Scanlan was second, with 16 points, and J, O’NelU was third. The Intermediate cup contest, which attracted 15 entries, brought to the fore a very promising athlete in C. Gallagher, who, starting in six events, gained five firsts and one second, finishing up with a total of 28 points out of a possible of 30. He won all the'flat rages from 100 yards to the half-mile, as well as winning the long jump, and he was second in the high jump. He had a big margin of points over J. Hungerford (10i) and D. Blackburn (6), who were second and;'third respectively • There were 10 entries for the junior, cup, which was won by B. Scanlan, who put up an outstanding performance to win all five events in the contest and gain. a possible of 25 points. J. Hurrlng was second with 9 points, and G. Hughes third with 7 points. The midget cup contest produced a similar result, G O’Hulllvan, a particularly promising lad. winning all five events to gain 25 points. He had little opposition, the second and third boys, K, McCarthy and K. De Courcy gaining 8 arid 4 points respectively. The other events on the programme were closely contested, and there was kenn competition.
