CLAY BIRD SHOOTING

SKEET CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH The 1939 South Island Skeet Championship was held on the Dunedin Gun Club’s grounds at Green Island on Saturday afternoon. The weather conditions were most unfavourable, heavy rain falling throughout the match. The championship was won by C. Wilson (Tawanui), with 19 breaks. W. Elliott (Balclutha) was runner-up, with 18 breaks. J. Stiven (Balclutha) and G. E. Turner (Dunedin) were next, with 17; J. G. Paterson (Moa Creek) and D. Campbell (Balclutha) broke 14; R. McDonald (Green Island), and T. Bladder (Invercargill) broke 13; and W. K. Roy (Palmerston), H. F. Broad (Invercargill) and E. Broad (Invercargill) broke 12. A £SO Open Handicap Match of 21 birds was shot in the morning, and, although there tvas no rain, a strong southwesterly wind made the shooting difficult. The following three competitors broke 20 birds and divided the first three prizes: —J. Stiven (Balclutha), handicap 14yds, L. P Hayes (Oturehua). 15yds. and H. F. Broad (Invercargill), 11 yards. R. McDonold (Dunedin) 16yds, G. E. Turner (Dunedin) 15yds, S. F. Aburn (Dunedin) 14yds, D. Campbell (Balclutha) 12yds and J. G. Paterson (Moa Creek) all broke 19 birds and divided fourth money. The rest of the scores were as follows:—W. L. Donald (Leeston) 14yds, J. R. Roy (Palmerston) 14yds, W. Mcßreen (Oturehua) 14yds. and r 'Bruce (Brighton) 14yds. 18: T. Blackler (Invercargill) 12yds, T. B, McKinlay (Dunedin) 12yds, and W. Elliott (Balclutha) 14yds, 17.
