SEASON OPENED FIRST GRADE COMPETITION BATSMEN HAVE GOOD DAY But for a cold wind which marred the greater part of the afternoon, overhead conditions were good for the opening of the Otago Cricket Association’s higher grade competitions on Saturday. Grounds were fast, but wickets gave bowlers no undue assistance. The result was plenty of interesting cricket and some very fair scoring. Three of four First Grade matches were played at Logan Park, where Grange, university, and Albion all had good first days. Against Carisbrook A, Grange scored 274, to which a new player, Monteath, contributed a good 66 and Chettleburgh 53 and then captured three Carisbrook wickets for only 12 runs. Against the Carisbrook B team, University totalled 241, due mainly to a 79 by Uttley and 81 by a young left-hander, Baker, and in the last quarter of an hour disposed of two Carisbrook batsmen for only five runs. Apparently it was not one of Carisbrook's good days. An aggressive innings of 83 by another new player, M. Anderson, was largely due to Albion's total of 268 against Dunedin. Allen scored a good 53 not out, and then took the only Dunedin wicket that fell for 40 runs. Out at Tonga Park. Kaikorai scored 141 CAllcott 52. McGregor 49) against Old Boys, and at stumps had dismissed six of the opposing batsmen for 134 (Mills 60 not out and Dickinson 42). The game is in an interesting position. ALBION v. DUNEDIN ANDERSON’S GOOD SCORE A score by M. Anderson of 83. including seven 4*s. a 5 and a 6, was the feature of Albion’s innings against Dunedin at Logan Park. Going in fifth wicket down, he hit out freelv from the jump, and was going well when he was bowled by Hudson. Albion’s tally was 268. of which Allen contributed 53 not. out in attractive style. Ditcbfield. Collie and Miller also scored well. Dunedin bad lost one wicket for 40 stumps. NINE SIXES KAIKORAI v. OLD BOYS The Kaikorai opening batsmen made a poor stand against the Old Boys’ attack in their match at Tonga Park, but good scores by McGregor (49) and Allcott (52) changed the situation, and the game is now at an interesting stage. The wicket was soft, and the ball was inclined to lift, but, notwithstanding this drawback, some big hits were witnessed. McGregor hit two 6’s and Allcott one, all off Groves (whose slow breaks could be followed by the batsmen on the dead wicket), and Hunt one, Mills one and Dickinson four. Nine 6’s are not often registered in an afternoon in local club cricket. Kaikorai had four wickets down for 6 and seven for 43, so it can be seen what an important part McGregor and Allcott played in stopping a rout. McGregor played a vigorous innings, and Allcott also picked the balls to hit with excellent judgment. Edwards was too eager to score and was caught out in the first over of Old Boys’ innings, and Hunt was batting with plenty of freedom when he was run out by good fielding and smart work by the Kaikorai wicketkeeper. Then Mills and Dickinson set about the bowling in workmanlike style, Mills being unconquered at stumps. GRANGE WELL AHEAD CARISBROOK A', POOR START With a first innings total of 274 against the opposing side’s 12 for the loss of three wickets, Grange is in a good position in its match against Carisbrook A, which was commenced at Logan Park. The ex-Wellington player Monteath made an impressive debut, and helped Grange along to the tune of 66, while Chettleburgh showed something of his old form in compiling 53. When eight wickets had fallen, Grange had 172 on the board, but Donovan and Payne became associated in a partnership which yielded 93 before Payne was well taken in the slips by J. Cameron. Donovan was unbeaten with 43 to his credit, Carisbrook’s innings opened at 6 o’clock, but the failing light troubled the batsmen. and in the first 15 minutes of the remaining half hour three wickets fell for four runs. UNIVERSITY’S GOOD START AGGRESSIVE INNINGS BY UTTLEY Weak bowling- by the Carisbrook B team and some enterprising batting for a while by one or two University batsmen comprised 'the main items of interest in the University-Carisbrook B match at Logan Park. University batted first on a wicket that had not had a great deal of preparation but which had been tamed apparently by the liberal use of water, and a bright knock by K. F. M. Uttley was mainly responsible for a score of 241. Uttley scored 79 in good time, and got the last 30 or so of his runs by aggressive and well-timed hitting. He hit 11 four’s and was out when he hooked a short ball straight to square leg. Baker, a young lefthander, had survived a very “ iffy ’’ start at the other end, and with Uttley out, he played very sedate cricket. His 81 was a promising innings although it could not be classed as ,a good one. He hit too many balls too close to fieldsmen: but he had bad luck to get out with a century in sight by stepping into his wicket. The remainder of the innings was no more impressive than was the Carisbrook attack, and the last man was out at 6 o’clock. The light was not good by this time and two Carisbrook wickets fell quickly before an appeal was successful.
