THEN AND NOW
A little more than a month after the outbreak of the second European wet of the present century, Germany was said to be preparing to “launch all her forces, land, sea and air, against the Allies.” A month after the, outbreak of the Great War in 1914 Germany had all but reached the gates of Paris, she had routed the Russians at Tannenberg, and her, armed raiders were lit work on every sea. .; The comparison is striking. After years of preparation, Germany to-day is losing the one great factor on which all her methods of waging warfare have been based—the initiative. She is now making a desperate effort to regain this, but also with the realisation that on land it will bring her directly against the powerful Magmot Line. . _ . Economically and industrially Britain and France are better equipped for waging a long war. The initiative is not as vital to them as to Germany. It is little wonder then that Hitler was so anxious for peace after Inis conquest of Poland. . - •
