Mrs Wedge, of Palmerston, gave a talk on various subjects of interest to each member. It was decided to contribute to the Lepers' Fund. * * * The monthly meeting of the Herbert branch was held on October 4, when the roll call was " Impromptu Speech," and the winners of the competitions were •as follows:—Banana cake—Mrs Gerrie 1, Mrs Campbell 2, Mrs Simpson 3; article made from remnantsMiss Irvine 1, Mrs Campbell 2; single bloom—Miss Campbell 1, Mrs Gerrie 2, Mrs Beckingsale 3. * * * Mrs Parker presided at the monthly meeting of the Pukeuri branch on Wednesday last. Mrs Steel was appointed secretary in place of Mrs Dugdale, who will shortly leave to reside at Timaru. Most of the members present showed their willingness to knit wool into garments for the Red Cross. The competitions resulted: Eggless cake—Mrs A. Anderson 1, Mrs Parker 2; best bloom—Mrs A. Anderson and Mrs L. Steel (equal) 1, Mrs Johnston 2. Mrs Parker, on behalf of the members, made the presentation of a crystal salad bowl and pickle jar to Mrs Dugdale in appreciation of her work in the division. Mrs F. Dumbleton rendered a solo, accompanied by Mrs Johnston on the piano. The hostesses were Mrs A. Anderson and Mrs Hughes. * * * The Lauder-Becks branch held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Mrs Hamilton-presiding. War-time emergency measures were discussed, and all members showed willingness to help. It was decided to hold the birthday party on November 1. The roll call was "My favourite flower." A competition—three best scones—resulted: Mrs Thurlow 1, Mrs J. Leask 2, Mrs J. Mee and Miss O'Neil (equal) 3. A social competition was won by Mesdames Armitage and Thurlow. The hostesses were Mesdames McCammon and J. Mee. ¥- * * The monthly meeting of the Clutha branch was held on Frida- last, Mrs A. J. Bell presiding. Miss Betty Anderson gave a report on country girls' week. A song by Mrs Jensen was much enjoyed. The hostesses were Mrs Throp and Mrs Donaldson. * * * Mrs Gemmell presided at the monthly meeting of the Weston branch. The motto was "Let us plough and sow, and reap and hoe, and do our best to make things grow." The roll call was "The country I would most like to visit." A demonstration on making bouquets was given by Mrs Beckingsale. Presentations were made to Mesdames Park and Budd, who were leaving the district, and to Mrs Frew, the oldest member, on her seventy-ninth birthday. The competitions resulted: Vegetables—Mrs Moore 1, Mrs Wates 2; cherry cake—Mrs Wates 1. The hostesses were Mesdames Gibson and Devon.
