PERSONAL AND SOCIAL
Misses Betty and Isobel Fraser, who have just returned from a trip overseas, wonder why some enterprising person has not thought of opening a home-made cake shop in London. "We saw very few cake shops, and the goods were anything but inviting," they say. The sisters spent a few days in Paris and were surprised to discover that a very good dinner, including champagne and liqueurs, could be obtained for five persons for the sum of £l—a somewhat ridiculous figure compared with the prices ruling in London. Miss Betty Fraser took a refresher course at Cromwell House, the London headquarters of Karitane nursing, while her sister enjoyed the experience of participating successfully in one of the lawn tennis matches arranged by a London newspaper. When they left London three days before war was declared the big shops were practically empty of customers.
