DRUIDISM

Arch. Druid Bro. Neame presided over the fortnightly meeting of Ivanhoe Lodge. Included in the correspondence was an invitation from the Waitati Cricket Club to play on November 25 and February 24. It was decided to enter a team for the Royal Arch Chapter’s opening and closing competition. The Arch Druid reminded members that they were to work Mistletoe Lodge on Tuesday. The lodge adjourned early to welcome visitors from Otago, Linden and Lily of the Valley Lodges who were the hosts for the evening and entertained the members and lady friends of Ivanhoe Lodge at dancing interspersed with vocal items. During thd evening D.G. Bro. R. Morrison in a short speech thanked all for their presence. Last Saturday a football team arrived in Dunedin from the Star of, Palmerston Juvenile Lodge under the leadership of Superintendent Bro. Lorimer, the party being met by DP. Bro. Morrison and P.D.P. Bro. Smaill representing the Juvenile Council. During the morning a visit was paid to the Grand Lodge office and the acquaintance made of the Grand Vicepresident and Grand Secretary. After lunch the party met at Hancock Park a local side comprised of juveniles from Progress. Linden’s Pride and Olive Branch. A fast, clean, open game followed in which honours ended even. At the conclusion of the game a trip around the peninsula was taken and after tea at the Dominion Cafe the visitors left for home. The fortnightly meeting of the Good Intent Lodge was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mosgiel, on Wednesday evening, Arch Druid Bro. M. J. Thomson presiding. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, who came along to voice their appreciation of the good work done by Bro. T. Smeaton, who was the lodge secretary for 18 years, but had to resign owing to indifferent health. The visitors by invitation were the Grand President, Bro. A. J. Hintoh, and Grand Lodge officers, D.P. Bro, W. Le Brun, No. 2 District, and officers and members of Lodges in No. 1 and 2 Districts. After the business of the lodge was transacted the lodge adjourned to carry out the presentation to Bro. T. Smeaton. A.D. Bro. M. Thomson then called upon the G.P., Bro. A. J. Hinton, to present Bro, Smeaton with an easy chair on behalf of the lodge, and the G.P thanked Good Intent for giving him the honour to do so. and in making the presentation to Bro. Smeaton referred to his ability and how he had worked in harmony with the Grand Lodge and hoped that he would have better health in his retirement and would be long spared to sit in his chair. The G.P also presented Bro. Smeaton with a cheque on behalf of the lodge. Bros. R. H. Thomson and M. J. Thomson, auditors, spoke of the efficient manner which Bro. Smeaton kept the lodge books. Several other members of the Good Intent also spoke of Bro. Smeaton having been an efficient secretary and a good worker for the order. Congratulations were extended to the new secretary Bro. F, Hudson, on attaining the position and wished him success. Bro. Smeaton suitably replied. A.D Bro. M. J. Thomson proposed the toasts of King and Druids, the Grand Lodge and Board of Management. Bro. R. H. Thomson, the D.P No. 2 District. Bro. Le Brun, Secretary Bro. F. Hudson, the P.G.P.’s treasurer. Bro. D Thomson. the visitors. Bro. C. Scott. Items were given bv Bro. W. B. Ruston. of Bay Lodge. Bro M. Thomson. Good Intent, and Bro. A. R. Rankin. Grand Vice-president of Grand Lodge, and a community sing was led by Bro. M. J. Thomson.
