WINTER SPORTS

INTERUNIVERSITY SKI-ING OTAGO REPRESENTATIVES' SUCCESS This year the interuniversity ski championships were held at Arthur's Pass under excellent snow and weather conditions. Lincoln College had been practising for a lew days beforehand, and was loined by teams from Canterbury University College and Otago University, which travelled to the oass on Thursday evening. August 17. On the Fridav the teams climbed to the Temple Basin Hut. making the journey from the road to the hut on skis. In the afternoon the Downhill event was held over a 1000 ft descent, starting with a 500 ft descent on a 35degree slope over virgin snow and finishing below the hut. Although mist came across several times, for the actual event there was good visibility for each competitor. Afterwards, a slalom course was set bv Dr H. Schmidt covering a 500 ft descent, the first half being on a steep, soft snow slope, but the last r>art being on a well-packed slope. This event was held on the Saturday each competitor having two runs. On Saturday afternoon a Laneiauf event was held over a track which started with a long uphill climb, then a traverse, and finally a switchback run, which finished at the start. A second lap was then run.
