MESSAGE TO HIS PEOPLE SURRENDER UNTHINKABLE "RESISTANCE UNTO VICTORY" (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SHANGHAI, Aug. 12. (Received Aug. 13, at 8 p.m.) Marshal Chiang Kai-shek stated: " With victory clearly in sight, China is embarking on the last stage of resistance, but the people must 'make further efforts to bear greater hardships. China is unconquerable. The road to surrender and slavery is unthinkable. The only road is resistance unto victory. Our tremendous resources will provide unlimited currency reserves. The country is otherwise self-sufficient."
A rigid curfew was imposed in the international settlement at Shanghai on the eve of the biennary celebrations. All places of amuse-
ment are closed and an additional 2000 international volunteers are under arms. The Japanese are also taking precautions in the occupied areas around the city. British troops are standing by in Tientsin, where a huge anti-British demonstration is threatened. "DOWN WITH BRITAIN" » LEAFLETS IN PEKING PEKING, Aug. 12. (Received Aug. 13, at 8 p.m.) A Japanese aeroplane showered leaflets on the diplomatic quarter, inscribed "Down with Britain, exclude the British." The British have protested. ANTI-BRITISH CAMPAIGN EXTENSION IN NORTH CHINA TOKIO, Aug. 12. (Received Aug. 13, at 8 p.m.) A preliminarv meeting of the Tientsin Anti-British Committee in North China resolved to expand and intensify the anti-British campaign. A demonstration day was fixed and an anti-British newspaper will be published. The Domei News Agency states that Mr Kato told Sir Robert Craigie that the conference would not be resumed unless the policing of Tientsin and the economic issues were handled simultaneously. The latter were not mentioned in the latest instructions from London.
