HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS

ANNUAL BALL Banners showing the decades through which the Otago Boys’ High School has flourished since its foundation 76 years ago were displayed on the walls of the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Thursday night, when the old boys gathered to participate in that always popular function, the annual ball. The arrangement of the blue and white streamers was both unusual and tasteful, giving the effect of curtains arranged in panels. From the balcony hung a fringe of matching streamers, together with the school crest, and more blue and white bordered the stage, where a stringed band played popular dance numbers for some 40 guests. A comfortable lounge was arranged near the entrance to the hall for the benefit of special guests.

The president of the association (Mr J. D. Fletcher), who was also chairman of the Ball Committee, was assisted in

receiving the guests by Mrs Fletcher, whose soft gown of green ninon featured sequin trimming and contrasted harmoniously with a bouquet of .golden daffodils and jonquils presented by the association.

The members of the executive (which was responsible for the arrangements of the ball) were Mr E J. Smith (who was accompanied by Mrs Smith in a gown of black taffeta and net with cyclamen flowers), Mr T. K. Sidey (with Mrs Sidey, in white novelty flowered satin, with spray of real, violets and daphne), Mr A. Twhigg (Mrs Twhigg wearing an eau de nil georgette), Mr W. J. Mclnnes (Mrs Mclnnes in turquoise blue ring velvet with beige fur trimming the matching

cape), and the secretary. Mr P. J. MacAvoy (whose partner, Miss Betty Aldridge, wore striped taffeta with cloak of crminette). John McGlashan Old Boys’ Association was ; represented by Mr John Solomon, who was accompanied by Mrs Solomon (wearing a black gown and spray of orchids). Mr W. J Meade, with Mrs Meade (in misty blue taffeta and cyclamen flowers) was present on behalf of the Christian Brothers’ Old Boys’ Association, and Mr L McMillan who was accompanied by Mrs McMillan (in black embroidered net), represented Waitaki Old Boys’ Association. During the evening an exhibition of the slow foxtrot and the quick-step was given by Miss Cora Duff and Mr Leo Schmelz. Miss Duff’s billowing skirts were composed of rose net.
