“Carnations and Hydrangeas” was the subject of an interesting address given’ by Mrs D. G. Nicolson to the gardening circle of the Otago Women’s Club on Tuesday afternoon. The lecturer explained that the carnation was brought by the .monks to England in the early days and was , one of the favourite flowers of royalty—in fact, it was reported that the Duke of Kent had brought a new carnation as a present for Australia. Mrs Nicolson described the different varieties of carnations, which flowers, she said, liked the sun and required soil that was neither too heavy nor too light. Stalking was very important and sea sand was advantageous. Most of the varieties of hydrangeas came from Japan and they had improved greatly during the last 15 years. Some of the following were well worth growing:— Parzival, Goliath, Rhinegold, Rubis, Madame A. Riverain. Marechal Foch and Gertrude Glahn. At the close of the lecture Mrs Leslie Wilson thanked Mrs Nicolson on behalf of those present.
