THE GIRLS’ LIFE BRIGADE

By Captain Motto: To save life. The officers’ training classes arranged bv the Dunedin Battalion Council will be held to-morrow in the Burns Hall gymnasium. At 2.30 p.m. Miss Crawley, needlework and hobbies judge, will preside at the meeting, and she will be followed by Miss Greenwood, who will take physical culture. Other subjects will be company drill and knottying. Tea will be served, and officers are reminded to bring their own food. This will give an opportunity for social fellowship, and the classes will be continued in the evening A New Hymn Verse The Rev, Mr Hayman, chaplain of the Ist Rotorua Company, has written an additional verse to the well-known hymn. “What a Friend We Have In Jesus," for his company. Feeling that other girls may like it and other companies may wish to adopt it, the captain has passed it on. The words are as follows: But not only times of sadness Claim our loving Saviour's care. For He meets us in our gladness. Every part of life to share. Give Him then in fullest measure Gratitude and love and praise. Share with Him your every pleasure. Let Him lighten all your days. Do You Know These? The company was preparing for its annual display, one of the items m which needed cards displaying the names of badges. The letters for the cards were all in good order, but somehow they got mixed. Here they are—what are the badges? , Skeborovol; catafirenn; storkkabcw; ghrinomunes: smablerr; thaulsratroiny; lymirinle; dalynur; cedertefanL Company Notes Fourth Dunedin Company (South Dunedin Baptist) .—The girls, together with the Cadets and the Governing Committee, spent an enjoyable evening on the occasion of the company’s seventh birthday. A display of the company formation was given, and a play was presented by the Cadets. The remainder of the evening was spent in games, after which supper was served by the ladies of the committee, and the birthday cake with its seven candles was cut. The captain, who is to be married shortly, was presented with a bouquet and gifts from the girls and from the Governing Committee. The girls at present are working for their knot-tying badge. Eleventh Dunedin Company (St. Kilda Methodist).—The work continues as usual, and although the company has lost two or three girls through removal from the district, others have come to take their places. There are six Cadets. The girls are learning first-aid. and hope to sit the elementary examination a little later. During the cold weather physical exercises have had a large place in the programme. Although the company did not enter for the Scripture competition the girls learnt the psalm and enjoyed repeating it together. A Knotting Game Players sit in two circles each of which forms a team. A piece of rope is passed round each circle. Music may be played or a whistle used. When the music stops or the whistle blows the one found holding the rope ties the kind of knot previously decided upon, and shows it to the officer in charge. The first one to finish correctly wins a point for her team. The game continues similarly until all have tied the knot, or until a certain agreed number of points is won by one team.
