AUSTRALIAN NEWS

THE WHEAT INDUSTRY ASSISTANCE FOR GROWERS (United Press Association! (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Aug. 10. (Received Aug. 11, at 1 a.m.) Wheatgrowers in Australia are to receive assistance from the Commonwealth and State Governments, which have decided to stabilise the price of wheat. The Prime Minister, Mr R. G. Menzies, explained to the Premiers’ Conference, which is sitting in Melbourne, that the Federal Government aimed at making the advance to growers sufficient to bring the total realisation for the season to 3s 4d a bushel at ports, which would involve a contribution by the community of over £7,000,000. The plan would require the full co-operation of wheatgrowing States on a pound foxpound basis. It would begin in the present season and continue indefinitely. In the event of the marketable crop exceeding 140,000,000 oushels (the average for the past five years), the return would be reduced accordingly. Mr Menzies said the plan meant a guaranteed return to the producer, irrespective of world prices. Growers at present are receiving a net return of about Is 4d a bushel.
