PUBLIC WORKS

ADOPTION OF MODERN METHODS SAVINGS OF TIME AND MONEY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. £ Savings made in time and money by the use of modern methods of construction on Public Works were instanced by the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) -during the Financial debate in the House pf Representatives to-night. Figures were quoted by the Minister showing the relative costs of constructing the Nelson, Whenuapai, Ohakea, Harewood, and Whangarei aerodromes by mechanised methods and by manual labour. These showed.that the usie of machinery would result in an aggregate saving of £556,591 as well as seven years two and a-half months in the time of construction. Discussing the Public Works expenditure of approximately £24,000,000 budgeted for in the Financial Statement, Mr Semple said that only £12,634,000 of that sum was under his control, the balance being under the control of other Ministers of the Crown. The Government was paying £80,534 annually to private people for Government accommodation and the aim was to try to build a home for every department of State. The amount paid to these people, was sufficient to pay interest and sinking fund on a greater sum than was estimated to be required for. public buildings this year.
