TOURING BUSH TEAM DEFEATED BY SOUTH CANTERBURY TEN POINTS TO EIGHT (Per United Press Association) TIMARU, Aug. 9. South Canterbury defeated the touring .Bush team to-day by 10 points to 8. T. Morrison, the former All Black, scored all the South Canterbury points—two penalty goals and a magnificent field goal from 40 yards out and 10 yards in from the touch line. The visitors* points were scored by W. Twentyman, a try, which he converted himself, and a penalty goal. The game was a poor one in the first half, but brightened in the second, when the scoring see-sawed. The home pack was out-weighted, but gave, a solid display, having the better of the set scrums and the line outs. SECONDARY SCHOOLS' MATCH WIN FOR ST. KEVIN'S Although the ground was little better than a quagmire, the game between King's High School and St. Kevin's College (Oamaru), which was played at the Caledonian Grounds yesterday afternoon, proved to be a bright exhibition. Although the visitors ran out winners by a good margin, the local team was by no means outclassed and came near to scoring on several occasions, especially in the second spell. The teams were as follows: St. Kevin's. Backs Kearney, McLean, Green, O'Kane, Hally. McKone, Neylon; forwards—Easton, Muir, Fallon, O'Connor. McGoldnck. Murray, Boyle. Holden, ,■ King's.—Backs—Smith, Gibson, MacKenzie, Cunningham, Geary, Murdoch, Joel; forwards—Brown. Watson, Ainge, Adams. Rogers, Anderson. McGlll, Hodgson. . . St. Kevin's opened on the attack and it was not long before a passing rush was ended by Green gaining possession and scoring a good try. Hally took the kick, but was not successful. St Kevin's 3. King's nil. St. Kevin's did not let up in the attack, and after a few minutes the second try came when Neylon secured the ball from a loose scramble near the line and dived ever. Easton's attempt at conversion failed. SIT Kevin's 6, King's nil. St Kevin's third score came shortly after, when a dribbling rush saw Green cross the line for a good try. Hally was not successful with the kick. St. Kevin's 9. King's nil. St. Kevin's was getting the ball from the majority of the scrums, but the heavy ground made bright passing movements impossible. Shortly before half time Rogers went off injured and was replaced by Irwin. Soon after the resumption of play. Green made a good run and. actualy crossed at the corner, but he had put one foot out a few yards down the line. King's cleared the position with useful kicking.. King's was now on the attack and came near to scoring on several occasions, but safe kicking saved the position. The King's attacking movement, was broken when Neylon started off on a solo dash and threw out a wild pass before he was pulled down. Green came through fast and carried tr,e ball across the line for a good try. The kick, taken by Hally. failed. St. Kevin's 12. King's nil. Shortly before the final whistle O'Kane attempted a solo dash. O'Connor coming up fast in rupport. The movement was not successful, however, and the scores were unchanged:—. St. Kevin's .. .. 12 points. King's.-. .. .. Nil The referee was Mr D. A. Kilgour. HAWKE'S BAY BEATS WANGANUI EIGHTEEN POINTS TO SEVENTEEN (Per United Press Association) WANGANUI, Aug. 9. Given the ball from 45 scrums out of a total of 60, the Wanganui backs,'without D. G Barton at centre, were unable to make any thrust against the resolute Hawke's Bay defence in the annual Rugby match between the two unions played at Wanganui to-day. Hawke's Bay won by 18 points to 17, scoring four tries to Wanganui's one. Had Hawke's Bay secured the ball as much as Wanganui did, the score against the home team would have been of cricket dimensions, because there was a thrust in the play of the second five-eighth in the Bay team. P. Reid, that was good to see. E. J. Callaghan, the Wanganui hooker, got the ball against D. Dalton, the New Zealand and Hawke's Bay front ranker and against H. .Fraser and A. Lincoln, who were tried in the hooking position when Dalton injured the cartilage,in a leg and had to leave the field. It was one of the best exhibitions of hooking seen on the Wanganui ground for many years. Glen Hook was the scoring medium for Wanganui, kicking four penalty goals and converting the one try the home team scored, thus being responsible for 14 of the points Wanganui scored. The other three came from a try scored by the back-rank forward, T. Collins. Fraser, Reid,. Jackson and Butler each scored tries for Hawke's Bay, Bradley converting three. DALTON INJURED UNLIKELY TO PLAY AGAIN THIS SEASON 'Per United Press Association) WANGANUI. AUg. 9. Last year's AH Black front-row forward D. Dalton, of Hawke's Bay. is unlikely to be able to play again this season; In the match against Wanganui to-day he injured a knee, and it was reported ater that a cartilage had been severely hurt. Dalton played in all the test matches against the Springboks in 1937. and was in Australia last year, being in the All Black front row in the tests there. THE FIJIAN TEAM % ATTRACTIVE TYPE OF FOOTBALL (Special to Daily. Times) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. When in Fiji recently Mr M. Mackenzie, president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, saw a trial match for the selection of the Fijian Rugby team to visit New Zealand shortly, and he formed the opinion that the touring side would provide attractive football. " They play a sort of unorthodox game which is pretty to watch," Mr McKenzie said prior to leaving for Blenheim to-day. The Fijians had adapted themselves to playing football in boots and in that respect they were well prepared for their visit to New Zealand, Mr McKenzie said. One of the points of interest about the trial was that forwards had packed the 2-3-2 scrum and another was the goal kicking by Thakambau. Play was willing and fast. "They are very clever at picking up dropped passes and at intercepting,' Mr McKenzie added. "The best possible team has been chosen for the tour, but how they will get on against our style of football is difficult to say." Mr McKenzie took part in the Fijian bowling tournament which was won bv Russell's rink from Nelson. The Paci.lc pennant, he said, was won by New Zealand from Fiji.

FOOTBALL IN SOUTH OTAGO CONFERENCE AT' MILTON The question of the refusal of the South Otago Rugby Union to grant affiliation to the Bruce Territorial Football Club when it made application at the annual meeting of the union was the principal subject discussed at a conference between the Otago Rugby Union, South Otago Sub-union and Toko and Bruce Clubs, held at Milton on Tuesday night. The Otago Union was represented by Messrs D. C. Jolly (president), H. Harris, I. Grant and D. M. Spedding, the South Otago body by Mr N. Gallagher, the Toko Club by Messrs U. Walker and J. Murray and the Bruce Club by Messrs H. Cowie and O. J. Densem. In its original application the Bruce Club notified that it would be nominated and seconded by two of the affiliated clubs and after a general discussion by the delegates the application was refused. At a meeting of the Management Committee on June 20 a further application was submitted on the grounds that the first one was not in order. At this meeting each member of the committee said he had received no notice from his club to nominate the Bruce Club, one member stating that he had received definite instructions to oppose the application. At a meeting on Tuesday night Mr Jolly was elected to the chair and a general discussion, which lasted for over two hours, ensued. The Bruce Club's contention that the decision of the South Otago Sub-union was not constitutional was not proved and the club was told that its application to the Management Committee was contrary to the rules of the sub-union, as the committee had no power to consider the matter. The Bruce Club was advised by the Otago Union delegates that the proper procedure now was to get five delegates from the sub-union to make application for a special meeting of delegates to be called and to have its nomination in proper form. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Otago delegates. PRIMARY SCHOOLS' MATCHES All Primary Schools' Rugby football matches arranged for yesterday will be played to-day at. the same times and places.
