BUDGET DEBATE

NEW ZEALAND'S DEBT " END OF BONDED SYSTEM " MR J. A. LEE'S ADVOCACY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. Some interesting speeches were made during the continuation of the Budget debate in the House of Representatives to-day. That which commanded most interest was undoubtedly the speech by Mr J. A. Lee (Govt., Grey Lynn), who is now assured of an attentive audience every time he speaks. He was right at home to-night in advocating the end of the bonded debt system of finance and castigating "the Montagu Normans" who. he declared, were opposed to democratic government. Mr J. G. Coates (Opposition, Kaipara) severely criticised the financial position of the country at present and the proposals outlined in the Budget. The Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) replied to the points raised during the debate by members of the Opposition. . Other speakers were Messrs F. L. Frost (Govt., New Plymouth), C. M. Williams (Govt., Kaiapoi) and J. M. Allen (Opposition, Hauraki). The House rose at 10.30 p.m.
