FRONTIER TENSION
GUARDS' GUN DUEL HUNGARY AND RUMANIA SERIOUS CONCERN CAUSED (United Press Association)' . ■ (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 2. The shooting duel between Hungarian and Rumanian frontier guards across the River Theiss (Tisza) yesterday—which lasted for six hours, with a few casualties—emphasises the already strained relations between the two countries. These relations are causing serious concern in both Bucharest and Budaoest. Both the Rumanian Foreign Minister, M. Gafencu, and the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Count Csaky. recently expressed a wish for better relations, but the situation has become worse. It is aggravated by a violent radio campaign, and is made more dangerous by the nervousness of the guards on either side of the River .Theiss, which marks Rumania's frontier with Hungary's new Ruthenian province (formerly in Czechoslovakia). The latest shooting incident, which is the third in four days, has, led to a suspension of the negotiations about log raft navigation on the Theiss. Navigation has been interrupted since March, and is awaiting a new agreement to replace the Convention between Rumania and Czechoslovakia. The incident is conflictingly reported, and each side accuses the Other of opening fire.
