TRADE RELATIONS

DOMINION AND AMERICA MR NASH IN NEW YORK TALKS WITH STATESMEN (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 8. Mr Nash conferred with the Acting of the Treasury, Mr Hanes, resulting in rumours that he possibly discussed with the Security Exchange Commission's approval New Zealand financing in New York. Mr Nash, however, denied this. He declared that he discussed general business conditions in New Zealand and in the United States and common tax problems. Mr Nash said he would confer with Mr Welles later concerning a reciprocal trade treaty, "renewing the conversations I had here in 1937, when it was impossible to conclude a treaty until that between America and the United Kingdom was concluded." Mr Nash added that he did not expect immediate results, but expressed the opinion that they would ultimately lead to a reciprocal treaty. Referring to the Pan-American Airways New Zealand air service, Mr Nash said he would welcome its inauguration. It would bring New Zealand into closer and friendly contact with the United States, while the way would be left clear for extension of British airlines. Referring to his European visit, Mr Nash said: " Nobody knows what will happen. I think there is an even chance of war. I certainly hope that fate prevents it." MR NASH'S MOVEMENTS A VISIT TO CANADA WASHINGTON, Aug. 9. (Received Aug. 10, at 1 a.m.) Mr Nash conferred with Mr Welles for 40 minutes and later Had a long conversation with the new Assistant Secretary of State, Mr Henry Grady, who is in charge of trade agreements. Later Mr Grady revealed that he and Mr Welles exchanged views with Mr Nash on the problem of reducing New Zealand's unfavourable balance of trade with the United States and said they discussed potential channels whereby this could be accomplished, either in or beyond the terms of a possible reciprocal trade agreement. Mr Nash will go to Canada- this. afternoon to confer with Canadian officials for several days.
