GREEN ISLAND AFFAIRS

REPORTS TO COUNCIL The reports of the various committees which were presented at last night's meeting of the Green Island Borough Council were adopted as follows. There were present at the meeting the Mayor (Cr G. Orange) and Crs T. G. Tompkins, T. McAhan, J. Callery, T. Mason. J. Boomer, F. Johns. C. Freeman, and T. Robson. . Engineer's Report The borough engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) reported as follows on the work carried out during the month:—- :' MAIN HIGHWAYS Dunedin-Gore State Highway, No. 61.—An effort has been made to patch up the few holes in this highway, and the shoulders, where unsealed, received attention. The heavy snow which has been experienced has damaged the surface in places, and it appears as if a considerable amount of money will have to be expended to bring it up to standard. Considerable time has been spent in grading snow from the centre of the road on Look Out Point Hill and throughout its whole length, while during the frosty weather sand was spread to aid the traffic. Most of the snow is now away from the highway and good conditions for traffic have been restored. Gren Island-Taieri Mouth, No. 232. No work has been done on this* highway. Snow covers most of it, so that it has been impossible to ascertain what effect the fall has had on the surKaikorai Valley Highway, No. 647. This road has been graded regularly, and some screenings and other material have been spread on it. It is in fair order. SCOTLAND TERRACE Scotland Terrace.—An application has been received from the inspector of housing construction asking that tee bank facing the subdivision in Scodand terrace be removed so that entrances can be made to the residences facing that street. A footpath was formed on this side, but it was impossible to level it to the boundary on account of the large gorse hedge, but this has since been removed. GENERAL WORK Unprecedented snowstorms were experienced and all work had to be suspended The previous week all leave accruing to men was arranged so that the matter is now completed. In consequence there has been little work done since last report. Several complaints were received from people using the footpaths, and in consequence toppings were spread on the following streets: York street, Quarry road, Mam highway, Short street, Paterson. Neill, Edinburgh, John and Miller streets, and ashes were spread on Thompson street Grading has been done in Abbotsford road, Neill and Exmouth streets. Kaikorai Valley road and Quarry road. The extension of the wood kerb in Exmouth street has been commenced. _ ~ Sanitary.—The blockage at the mouth of the Kaikorai Stream having been removed, the pipes from the pump were repaired, and water is now available at the sanitary depot The bad weather has caused the slip at Poland's to settle considerably, and as it was anticipated that it might affect private property, instructions were received to commence repairs. The snowfall has not improved matters, and so far the work has not been commenced as it requires to dry out as much as possible. The necessary calculations for the design of the wall have been made and tho work should be commenced in a day or two. Scotland terrace is in bad order, and the removal of the electric light and power line has not improved the footpath. Instructions have been given to have some screenings spread on the roadside and some toppings on the footpath. Cemetery and Reserves There have been seven Interments since the last report, and this work has occupied most of the sextons time. The bad weather caused settlement in recent interments, and these have been filled up. A ditch has been cut at the back ol the cemetery. It has been made parallel to the back boundary, and four feet wide, with suitable side slopes. A jumper has been supplied to the sexton to ascertain the amount of rock, as requested, but be has not been able to complete the work. No other work has been carried out on account of the bad weather Water and Lighting The consumption of water has been greatly reduced during the past month, the Freezing Company and other allied industries having finished their seasonal work. The city engineer has been interviewed as to the position of the suggested improvements to the supply, and has advised that tenders are being called for the material required. An application having been received for a service to the last

house in Brooks subdivision from Mr Barrett, the H-inch. main was extended and a service given. Two services have been renewed, and a stop cock repaired. Two meters were examined (those supplying the manse and H. Christie) and tested. Some additional parts are required to. replace worn ones, and these have been ordered from Wellington. The New Zealand Drug Company's No. 2 meter will be tested during , the incoming week. The water extensions in Emerson street and Thoreau streets are progressing satisfactorily considering the bad weather, and there are 410 ft yet to lay. All house connections have been made in Thoreau street, but those in Emerson street cannot be completed until the laying is finished. "•«'-., Lighting.—The timing clocks have been wound regularly. The replacement of lamps has continued to be abnormal, 37 being renewed since last report—l 3 on the Burnside circuit and 24 on the Green Island circuit. The city electrical engineer has promised to have voltage tests made and advises that a regulator has been installed m the system, and consequently the voltage will be consistently higher although not exceeding the maximum set out. DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE • Owing to the bad weather and the men receiving holidays due to them, little work has been done since the last report. The sewer on the drainage right through allotments 15, 16 and 19 has been completed to the boundary of allotment 19, a total length of 345 ft of four-inch sewer. In Emerson street, the six-inch sewer has been laid for a distance of 460 ft, and a commencement has been made to excavate the remaining length. A start has also been made to huild one of,the manholes. The street connection to the residence in Mulford street being built by J. F. Mills has been completed. To date, 235 connections have been made to the sewerage system, one being in Emerson street for two units tot the Housing Department. The sewer is not yet in operation, and the cost will be chargeable to the department.
