ALEXANDRA Borough Council The monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Deputy Mayor. Cr W. Hewitt, presiding. Before proceeding the Deputy Mayor referred to the illness of the Mayor, Mr W. Bringans. A motion of sympathy was carried. Cr Hewitt also referred to the illness of the Prime Minister (Mr Savage), and a similar motion was carried. The State Advances Corporation wrote in connection with the housing shortage in Alexandra, and stated that the Housing Department had made repeated efforts to obtain tenders for the nine houses, but had so far been unsuccessful. It was also stated that there had been only one applicant, and that did not seem to suggest a shortage. The opinion was expressed by councillors that if the houses were built and residents knew the rentals they would soon be taken.

E. G. McGeorge. surveyor, Dunedln, wrote in connection with Mrs Adcoek's subdivision, stating that Mrs Adcock was agreeable to provide the access roads if the council paid for the legal agreement. She also agreed to make one of the sections the reauired 40feet frontage. A. E. Ryan, N. Ruff, and M. Ashworth wrote requesting the council .to obtain the land in the lane at the rear of their properties, which had been Utilised as such for over 20 years. The town clerk stated' there war nothing in the New Zealand law giving the council power to take the land, although there was an English law applying in New Zealand, but it was very indefinite. The council decided not to taken any action in the matter. The Alexandra Bowling Club applied for rebate on half rates on its property, which was granted. . A. M. Rivers wrote applying for a permit to shift a hut from, one section to another in the residential part of the borough.—Granted, provided it was used as a coal-house and not as a living room. The Alexandra Badminton Club's application for hire of the Town Hall was granted at a rental of 7s 6d for the first night and 5s for the second night. '.. .v': Cr Marslln reported that, about 1000 trees, five years old, had.been barked by hares and rabbits during thp recent snowstorm. A hare drive had been organised, and a number of resin dents had done valuable Work in helping to the pest." .' V- ".: Cr Parsons reported, that;,the Mayor; and -he had represented the council at the annual meeting of the Fire Brigade, and he wasipleased to report the brigade was in a healthy state both financially and numerically. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £303 8s Id in the genera] account and £I4OO in the Post Office Savings Bank account.. Accounts totalling £278 2s were passed for payment. The Finance Committee reported on two applications for house loans, which were approved. The Weather The weather during the,past week has been fine and sunny, with-sharp frosts. The recent snow in and around Omakau has practically disappeared, but there is still a fair coating in the Ida Valley, district, and Oturehua. Yesterday a thaw set in and conditions are now much milder. School Re-opening In accordance with the usual "prdcedure of observing the term holidays during July, the Omakau School has been closed for four weeks and' will re-open to-morrow. . ' Vincent Jockey Club. :: The annual meeting of the Vincent Jockey Club, which was postponed from last week on account of Weather conditions, has been fixed for August 17, at Omakau. • WANAKA The Weather Last week, although some fog was experienced during the mornings, the days were fine and sunny by mid-rday. The frosts are not as hard as usual, and the nights continue to be clear and fine. Obituary The death occurred suddenly on August 1 of Mrs Templeton, an old resident of the district; who was widely known and respected. Mrs Templeton, who was in her sixty-fifth year, was born at Tarras, and lived at Pembroke for many years. She is survived by a family of three sons and . three daughters. The funeral took place at Pembroke on Friday. Quail Shooting ' The quail shooting season ended last week. Local sportsmen report that the season was a good one, the coveys being more plentiful than last season. The birds have been noticeably lower down lately, owing to the'- snowfall on the ranges. Golf The first round of the Club Championship was postponed on-account of the condition of the links. A Fbufball Bogey was played instead, the result being as follows.v-Mrs -Seaife v.
