LONG CYCLE RUN
THROUGH SOUTH ISLAND BOY SCOUT UNDERTAKING Although the plan to hold a North Island v. South Island Boy Scout cycle relay race has been abandoned owing to the uncertainty of the weather conditions and the difficulties of organisation, Mr C. H. Wing, Otago metropolitan commissioner has made arrangements for a long relay journey through the South Island. This will be commenced from Invercargill at 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon, and the rider is expected in Dunedin at 1C.30 a.m. on Saturday, It is expected that Christchurch will be reached on Monday, and if conditions to the north are suitable, the journe- will be extended to Nelson.
One cycle will be used throughout the journey, and each rider will cover, on an average, about four miles and a-hal.f. At the completion of each section the cycle wih be taken on by a waiting Scout, who will have been left by a preceding motor car. and the remaining Scout will be picked up on the car’s return journey In more closely-populated to give larger numbers of Scouts a chance to participate, the sections will be shorter The Scout cyclists are scheduled to reach Balclutha at 8 o’clock on Friday evening, Leavin'/ Balclutha at 6 a.m. on Saturday the riders are expected at the Chief F-’ost Office Dunedin, a* 10.30 a.m A message from the Mayor of Invercargill (Mr J R. Hanan) to the Mayor of this citv Mr A. H, Allen) will be carried, and Mr Allen, in turn, will despatch a document to the Mayor of Christchurch. Full details of the number of entries received so far for the centennial jamboree at Wellington will also be taken north
