CENTENNIAL RELAY RACE
CANTERBURY PROPOSAL CHRISTCHURCH TO AKAROA i Per United Press Association) 'CHRISTCHURCH. July 12. One of the major events in celebration of the New Zealand Centennial in the South Island will be a Centennial relay race in which athletes will compete from the Sign of the Takahe, Christchurch, to the township of Akaroa where the British flag was hoisted In 1840. The Takahe-Akaroa race is an annual ‘'vent, usually restricted to Canterbury clubs, but a decision was reached tonight to throw it open to athletes from all centres. The race will be held at the King’s Birthday week-end, June 1, 1940. A fund is to be established for the assistance of teams travelling and invitations will be issued immediately.
