RACING AND TROTTING

—— —■♦♦♦ — —— THE SANDWICHMAN AS HURDLER THE GRAND NATIONAL MEETING FIREGUARD AMONG THE FAVOURITES

grouped in second place. Fireguard and Charade are favourites for the Grand National Hurdles, but so far a favourite has not been found for the Winter Cup. for which 10 horses are grouped. Alcanuar The Balboa stallion Alcanzar is advertised to travel the Palmerston district. His dam, Kokowai, was got by All Red—Kea. by Captain Webb—Kie Kie, by Lord of the Isles—Toi, by Diomedes—Toi Toi. by St. Aubyn—Waimea, by Sir Hercules—Flora Mclvor by Rous’s Emigrant—Cornelia by Young Grasshopper from Manto. one of the most prolific and successful taproots in the Stud Book. Black Banner When handicapped for the Dunedin Steeplechase, run on the final day of the Wingatui meeting, Black Banner was handicapped at 12.10. Gold Wren at 11.9, and Slayer at 9.0 In the Grand National Steeplechase the weights read; Black Banner 10.10, Slayer 10.3. and Gold Wren 9.12, Black Banner meets Slayer on no Jess than 451 b better terms at Riccarton than when handicapped for Wingatui He meets Gold Wren on 31b better terms, and the latter meets Slayer no 421 b better terms. The Late Mr D. H. Roberts The death is reported from Greymouth of Mr D. H. Roberts, whose colours were well known throughout New Zealand. One of the first horses raced in his name was The Cornet, who won the Dunedin Birthday Handicap in 1911. Mr Roberts won the James Hazlett Gold Cup with Fiery Cross in 1918 and the Auckland Cup with the same horse in 1917 He won the Great Autumn Handicap with Glendower in 1918. the Grand National Hurdles with Jolly Beggar in 1935 and 1936, and the Greymouth Cup of 1936 with the same horse. Mr Roberts also raced several horses of the useful type and owned the imported stallion Sarto after the break-up of the Warrington Stud. The Spring Handicaps Sporting men. found sufficient to interest them in the weights for the. principal spring handicaps to cause opinions to be guarded. There is a general feeling (says tho Sydney Herald) that Ajax could win the Melbourne Cup or the Caulfield Cup with the weights allotted him, but so far as the Epsom Handicap and the Metropolitan are concerned no one was prepared to nominate the probable favourites, and it is likely that when the first lists are available on the racecourses there will be a diversity of opinion. Commendation; for the work of the handicappers dealing with Ajax was freely expressed. If Ajax remains in the fields he seems assured of favouritism, certainly unless some light-weight shows superlative form as the meetings approach. but if he'should be withdrawn the weights are so framed that the handicaps are still on a sound scale and will not be unduly flattering Until there is something definite regarding Ajax’s programme it is likely that discussions on the Melbourne races will be restricted. . It is four months before the Melbourne Cup is run. arid it could not be expected that a declaration Should be made regarding Ajax's programme. It would not be difficult to Imagine the outcry if the stable announced the probability of a start in the Melbourne Cup - and then found it unwise to run him.

Harrisor (president), H Greer and C. Goodwin (vice-presidents) have been reelected unopposed for those positions and 18 nominations for the committee have been received. The annual meet ing will be held on July 17. Frequent Questions It is a remarkable fact that a trot ting meeting seldom takes place al the Sydney fixtures without someone striking trouble. The running is supervised by stipendiary stewards, but apparently risk is taken. On June 2( the running of The Radical in th< Trotters’ Handicap at Victoria Part was questioned. The stewards of th« Australian Trotting Club reported: “Ar inquiry was held into the running ol The Radical (Vic.) in the Trotters Handicap. After hearing evidence, the stewards decided to. disqualify L Butler (owner, trainer and driver) anc the bay gelding The Radical for 11 months for improper practices.” A Renomination Remit Most of the remits to be presentee at the annual conference of trottinf club delegates to be held in Christchurch on Augugst 7 will be proposec by either the president of the Trotting Conference or the New Zealanc Trotting Association, but one that maj cause soma discussion (says the

Press) will be presented by the Manawatu Trotting Club. It asks that rule 301 and sub-clauses (a), (b) and (c) be struck out. Rule 301. as. it stands at present, says that nothing in the rules shall be deemed to prevent any club inserting in its programme a condition that horses entered at the meeting may be renominated for a higher class on the first or subsequent day or days of the meeting, provided that horses have in the meantime put up a placed performance; that a renomination be made up to three hours immediately preceding the declaration of handicaps; and that, in the case of renomination for the second or subsequent days of a meeting, it be made at any time fixed by the club, not exceeding half an hour after the finish of the last race on the first, second or last day but one of such meeting The object of the Manawatu Club m presenting the remit is hard to understand, but possibly the delegate will have something to support his contention when the remit comes up for discussion. Under the present rule there is no obligation on the part of clubs to allow renomination. .It Is purely a matter for the discretion of the Programme Committees of the different clubs to say whether it shall be permissible for a horse to be renominated.

I RICCARTON NOTES

TRACKS FROZEN HARD (Special to Daily ' Times) CHRISTCHURCH July 11. Following a sharp frost, the tracks at Riccarton were very hard this morning. Training operations were delayed, and there was very little fast work, none until the grass track thawed under the influence of the sun. Many of the horses were given strong pacing on the sand, while some of the trainers decided to postpone working their teams until later in the day. Tomcat (A. Stove) and Night Wind (C Elliott) went well in a school over a round of the steeplechase fences. They were not sent at top speed, but jumped well. ~ . , , A. S. Ellis has changed his plans for Bit o’ Blue. There is not time to educate him properly as a steeplechaser, so he will be raced, in the meantime, over hurdles. On his showing at Ashburton last month, he should pay his way in that department. A. S. Ellis has taken Nigella and Merry March in hand again. The former has been spelling for about six months, while Merry March has been off the scene since last August, and has been gelded since he was previously in F. D. Jones, after giving Royal Chief and Moorsotis useful pacing for a few weeks, has started them in stronger tasks, and during the next week or two they will be sent along in smart sprints. They should be fairly forward when they leave for Sydney early next month. . It is probable that Jones will have two North Island horses under his care on the Sydney trip. Mr R. T. Reid contemplates sending Beau Repaire and Olympus, and if they go Jones will look after them. Beau Repaire, a rising three-year-old. is a half-brother to Royal Chief. He showed some useful form this season, and may be a promising Derby candidate. Olympus, bred in Australia. Is a rising four-year-old by Pantheon. He is a big fellow, and made many admirers as a two-year-old. He opened the season with a win. and since then in addition to two more wins, he has been placed several times. Defaulter has been doing strong work, following road exercise for a couple of months. F. A. Roberts hopes to leave for Sydney on July 23. He may take another horse, as a mate for the stable crack, but in the meantime no arrangements have been made in this direction. ‘ 4 _ TIlj , The racing career of Wild Chase is at an end. He will be sent this week to his birthplace, the Stonyhurst Stud where he will take up stud duty in the spring. He is a five-year-old hy Paper Money from Wild Hind, a descendant of the famous Macdonald family and his pedigree includes many of the best Stonyhurst lines. He was a good racehorse, a brilliant two-year-old, that rose to Derby and weight-for-age honours. while he ran some great races over a distance in handicaps, under big weights. Added to his breeding and racing form, he stands as a handsome horse with size and quality. , . .. There have been two changes at the Stonyhurst Stud. Jericho has been disposed of and will do stud duty next season in the Culverden district. He is by Archery from Judith, by Martian from Hebrew Maid, and has the smart sprinter Counterblast as evidence of his ability to sire good stock. Cricket Bat. by Winning Hit from Equipment, is also to leave Stonyhurst. He has been disposed of on lease and • will be at the stud next season in the Hornby district He was a good racehorse and one or two of his young progeny have shown promise of being useful. He will be sent down for the stud on the day that Wild Chase goes there this week. Two more Stonyhurst yearlings Will come to Riccarton this week to be prepared for two-year-old races in the latter part of next season. One of them is Great Heart, a gelding by t Magnus from Stout Heart a sister to Cricket Bat, and the second is Haughty Lad. a brother to Haughty . Winner, by Winning Hit from Disdainful.
